Working in 18 karat gold and sterling silver, her intricately carved pieces, resplendent with bold faceted gemstones, are reflective of ancient times in a distinctly modern look. I volunteer here in the New York City animal shelter system trying to find “forever homes” for all the dogs that are turned in there every day. This is also the place where I “pick a winner” or perhaps more accurately a “winner” picks me when I have space for a new dog in our home. But sometimes fate intervenes and a stray comes into my life from another direction. That was the case with my girl Winifred who you see here, also known as Winnie. 10 years ago Winnie walked up in front of my house as a young stray on the street. She had no collar and suffered from a very bad case of mange. She literally had no hair but she had this gorgeous white snoot, a big heart and a boat load of personality. I already had 3 dogs but we just had to take her in, at least to find her a home. Initially we thought that we would just get her back to health and then find her a “forever home” but in the 8 weeks it took to cure her of her mange it became clear that she would just have become part of the “pack”. Now, 10 years later my stray girl is our “old lady” but she is still a super loving dog.
