We’re deeply saddened to hear the news about Marjane Satrapi’s passing. She came to our festival in 2008 and was a pure force of nature. Wise, funny, and engaging. Persepolis will surely go down as one of the most important and original books of recent times. Our condolences to her loved ones, and all readers who loved her.

One hundred years ago today, a baby was born with a HOWL!

Happy birthday, Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997). Poet, prophet, and one of the great friends of this bookshop.

On April 13, 1958, crowds packed our ground floor for a public reading of Howl.

Allen and Peter Orlovsky had spent the days before plastering homemade flyers all over the Latin Quarter. The afternoon did not go quietly.

Gregory Corso, also on the bill, objected to an opening reader he deemed insufficiently poetic, so he stripped off his clothes and read his poems naked, flanked by two bearded bodyguards who threatened to rough up anyone who dared leave. He was, by all accounts, a big success.

Ginsberg, also by then undressed and a little drunk (he blamed nerves), read Howl next and caused a sensation. Ramblin’ Jack Elliott played songs and read from On the Road. And William Burroughs, who had previously refused to participate, was lured to the front by a young bookshop regular and gave what is believed to be the first-ever public reading from the then-unpublished Naked Lunch. “Nobody was sure what to make of it, whether to laugh or be sick. It was something quite remarkable,” said George Whitman.

Here’s to 100 years of the man who made bookshop happenings like that possible.

Handcrafted responsibly in France from recycled leather, our fringed bookmarks are hot-foil printed with words that have lived on our walls, and in our hearts, for generations. Each one is a little piece of the bookshop to carry with you.

Choose from three designs:

“Be Not Inhospitable”
Speckled black with gold foil, printed with the ethos of Shakespeare and Company: “Be not inhospitable to strangers lest they be angels in disguise” — also painted on the wall of our upstairs library.
A percentage of proceeds from the sale of the “Be Not Inhospitable” bookmark goes to support associations that encourage reading at all ages.

“Clouds and Waves”
Sea-green with silver foil, carrying a line from Rabindranath Tagore’s poem: “I will be the waves and you will be a strange shore.”

“Streets of the World”
Blush-pink with gold foil, bearing George Whitman’s beloved description of all bookshops: “Where the streets of the world meet the avenues of the mind.”

Take your seat for dinner between sparring brothers, pack a bag for the honeymoon from hell or join the hunt for a missing child at an adult birthday party—this collection of overlooked classics and new and translated fiction has terrible gatherings for all reading tastes.

Colette's first four books came out under the name W***y, the nom de plume of her husband, Henri Gauthier-Villars, who passed them off as his own. He had a team of ghostwriters and when he discovered his wife could write she became his newest recruit. W***y was a talented editor and knew how to work the press, but he was also a tyrant. It wasn't unusual for him to lock Colette in her room, only letting her out when she had completed enough pages. After their divorce, Colette started a bitter lawsuit to contest W***y's authorship of her first novels.

We currently have a first edition of her second book, Claudine à Paris, inscribed by W***y, in our rare book room.
