RIP Jeanne.. ❤️💪
We are heartbroken to share that "Rosie the Riveter" Jeanne Gibson, 100, passed away yesterday, July 29, 2026.
At just 18 years old, Jeanne left her home in Minnesota in the summer of 1944 to work as a welder at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, helping build destroyers for the war effort. She later served with the Army Transportation Corps in Juneau, Alaska, before going on to earn her Ph.D., teach for 30 years, and earn her private pilot license.
Jeanne was one of the more than six million American women who served on the home front as a "Rosie" during World War II. In 2024, Jeanne and her fellow Rosies were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their extraordinary contributions.
Over the years, Jeanne became a cherished friend to many of us at Pacific Historic Parks. She traveled to Hawaii many times to participate in commemorative events, share her experiences with visitors, and speak with local students about her work during the war. Her warmth, encouragement, and enthusiasm made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of meeting her. She especially loved encouraging young girls to pursue their dreams and reminding them that they could achieve whatever they set their minds to.
Jeanne also remained a passionate advocate for preserving the legacy of the Rosies, volunteering at Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park on “Rosie Fridays” and inspiring countless people to learn about the women who helped win the war. Just days ago, Jeanne was honored with a Wall of Honor banner at the park and recognized during a San Jose Earthquakes halftime show celebrating local Bay Area heroes.
Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved Jeanne, especially her fellow Rosies and the many friends whose lives she touched.
