Main en bois sculpté polychrome, datant du XVIe siècle environ, d’origine européenne (italienne ou allemande), avec un stuka japonais en bronze datant du XIXe siècle environ, et une cale en albâtre japonais sculptée à la main par Danays. Paris Chong speaks with Los Angeles–based painter Joshua Elias, whose work explores memory, place, symbolism, and the shifting boundary between abstraction and representation. Elias has longstanding ties to the Southern California art community and has also been associated with 3.1 ART through exhibitions and residency-related programming in Saissac, France, creating a compelling transatlantic context for their conversation.

Interviewer and host, Paris Chong, is a Los Angeles–based gallery director and curator of Leica Gallery Los Angeles in West Hollywood.

‘Golden Bough’ by Sarah Danays.

Hand-carved Giallo Carrara marble bust with section of an Art Nouveau repousse silver Druid ritual collar (possibly R Lalique or other regarded European designer of the period, circa 1890-1910). Collar held in place with silk and with glass period opalite moonstone beads. Approximate dimensions 33x28x20 cm.

Buste en marbre Giallo Carrara sculpté à la main, orné d’un fragment de collier rituel druidique en argent repoussé de style Art nouveau (probablement signé R. Lalique ou un autre créateur européen de renom de l’époque, vers 1890-1910). Le collier est maintenu en place par de la soie et des perles d’opaline et de pierre de lune d’époque. Dimensions approximatives : 33 x 28 x 20 cm.

« Patron jaune » de Sarah Hô, laine, cuivre, lin, coton, 50x40cm.

Gleaning, gathering, recovering, and inter-
twining fibers engages a material and sensory
understanding of the world. Here, meaning is
constructed as much by the arrangement as by
this universal, ancestral and foundational ges-
ture – that of intertwining four twigs at the edge
of a walking path – thus inscribing his work in a
close link with inhabited places, their histories,
their memories and their resources.

Glaner, ramasser, récupérer et entrelacer
des fibres permet d’acquérir une compréhension
matérielle et sensorielle du monde. Ici, le sens
se construit autant par la disposition que par
ce geste universel, ancestral et fondamental
– celui d’entrelacer quatre brindilles au bord
d’un sentier – inscrivant ainsi son œuvre dans un
lien étroit avec les lieux habités, leurs histoires,
leurs mémoires et leurs ressources.
