I specialize in the restoration and fine tuning of high end stringed instruments. You can find here et Mrs. H. and A. I have learned a lot. I still am.

- Graduated in 2007 from the Swiss School of Violin Making, Brienz, Switzerland. Four years of training, under the direction of Hansruedi Hoesli, Simon Glaus, and Jean-Jacques Fastnacht, internationnally reknowned violin restoration expert.

- 2007, 2008 : a bit of change of horizons... Violin-making in Central America. I had the opportunity to meet and work with many different makers, restorers and musicians. Costa Ricans, Mexicans, Cubans... Different ways to live and feel music, strong traditions and new experimentations, great people, and highly gifted handworkers

I worked as a volunteer within the music school of Santa Ana, Costa Rica (partnership with the Music Conservatory of Sion, Switzerland), then with the music department of the University of Chiapas (UNICACH) in Tuxtla Guttierez, Mexico, with Mr. Plancarte, violin-makers in Queretaro, Mexico, for el Maestro E. Ramirez, violin-maker in Tepoztlan, Mexico...

- 2009, back to France. Violin making and restoration workshops, back to the old european tradition and knowledge (and a little new music too)

Various internships in the workshops of masters makers and restorers. Ms Hélène Guichard,in Grenoble, Mr Claude Macabrey in Lyon, Mr Bodo Vosshenrich in Villemur sur Tarn ...

- 2009 till now, Hong Kong. It's been four years now I settled down in Hong Kong. I had the priviledge of having Mr Vincent Gonthier as a master and teacher, and definitely specialized in the restoration of high quality music instruments. Within Orfeo Strings first, as the direct assistant of Mr Vincent Gonthier and Mr Dany Chan, then as a senior restorer within Vincent Gonthier Fine Violins, I had the opportunity to study, restore and finetune some of the most beautiful pieces of famous antique masters and be at the service of musicians from the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Simphonietta, the Macau Orchestra and great musician from everywhere in Asia.

Before and after , restoration or a doublebass by Xavier Jacquet.
As often, this project was a collab with my friend and colleague Jeroen Bruynooghe : I restored the body of the instrument, he took care of the new neck, set up, etc... Many thanks to him and to the musician for their trust !

I recently finished a restoration project on a beautiful Jaquet Père double bass... More pictures to come soon.
This one, I would have happily kept it, the patina was just so very pretty. But the owner is a much better musician than I am, and a bass like this needs to make music! 😊
And me, I'm just happy I got to work on it!

Celle ci j'aurais bien voulu la garder, elle est tellement jolie ! Mais elle sonne à nouveau - et plutôt bien ! - entre les mains de son musicien, et c'est très bien comme ça 😊

This well-loved factory cello fell down at the end of a rehearsal. It got a new neck, and is now playing happily again!

Ce violoncelle chinois est tombé après une répétition. un joli nouveau manche plus t**d, et voilà qu'il recommence à faire de la musique, son propriétaire est content et moi aussi.

Before and after - a back crack that wasnt included in the work we planned originally, but I would have been unhappy leaving it like that!
A bit of cleaning, reglueing, securing and touching up and it feels better... 😊

Here are a few steps of the restoration process of the Jacquet Père bass with collapsed arching I showed you recently.
The big first step was making a plaster cast of the whole front - not an easy task. I I'll admit I find that work scary but also quite fun to do. 😊
You can see on the next picture how a sunken area translates into a bump on the cast.
That cast then gets corrected to go back to a smooth and regular arching.
Then, the front of the bass is gently pressed down into the newly corrected cast using hot sandbags, and bit bit bit it regains it's original shape.
Last pictures are a peak of the inside work to stabilize the whole thing. New bassbar of course. I also had to do a lot of patches in the bassbar area, more than I usually would like to - I try to be as little invasive as possible. Reason for this was that there were deeply inlaid cleats everywhere underneath the bassbar, and they were full of PVA glue. So replacing them was necessary. I also replaced the old and worn half-edge while at it, to make sure it goes back to the owner healthy and ready for a few more decades of music 😊

Quelques étapes du processus de restauration de la jolie contrebasse Jacquet Père que je vous ai montrée récemment, celle dont la voûte de table s'était effondrée !
D'abord, on réalise un moulage en plâtre de la table en l'état. C'est un gros boulot, un peu effrayant- c'est gros !- mais sympa à faire aussi.
Sur la photo suivante, on voit bien que les creux sur la table apparaissent comme des bosses sur le moulage plâtre.
Le plâtre est ensuite corrigé pour revenir à une voûte harmonieuse.
Enfin, la table est doucement pressée dans le plâtre corrige à l'aide de sacs de sable chaud. Peu à peu, la voûte reprend sa forme originale.
Enfin, les dernières photos vous donnent un aperçu du travail de renfort à l'intérieur. J'ai bien sûr posé une nouvelle barre, mais j'ai aussi du réaliser des doublures dans toute la zone en dessous. Ce n'est pas un choix habituel- on essaye toujours de préserver le matériel original au maximum, mais ici pas le choix : il y avait partout des taquets incrustés profondément et collés à la colle blanche, il était nécessaire de les remplacer !
Au passage, j'ai aussi refait la vieille doublure de bords, abîmée, et voilà ! L'instrument est reparti sur des bases saines, prêt à nouveau pour quelques décennie de musique ! 😊

So, here is a restoration project I recently finished. The front of this Jacquet Père double bass had suffered a pretty severe deformation. I can see two reasons for the arching collapsing like this : a bassbar that was fitted with tension, and also, this bass had been previously restored twice by guitar luthiers, the last time being about 45 years ago : they did an extensive job, and it did keep the bass going, but they used PVA glue on the bassbar cracks. Appart from being difficult to remove, PVA glue stays elastic. So, cracks opened again, the inlaid cleats (grrr...) and patches didn't hold...and the déformation got quite extreme.
This was a challenge, and to be perfectly honest, I was not 100% satisfied with the arching. It still is a tad bit too flat and I would have liked it even rounder.
But hey, it's been months of work and this beautiful bass is definitely back to life!
And me, I have cleaned enough PVA glue for a lifetime - or at least for now.😊

As usual, this is a collab with my friend and colleague Jeroen Bruynooghe, I did the body and he did all the rest (neck, set up, etc...). Many thanks to him and to the musician for their trust.

Voici une restauration que j'ai terminée il y a peu. La table de cette jolie contrebasse de Xavier Jacquet était très sévèrement déformée lorsqu'elle est arrivée.
Deux raisons à mon avis à cela : sans doute une barre d'harmonie ajustée avec de la tension, et surtout, deux restaurations précédentes par des luthiers guitare. Ils ont fait un travail important, et grâce à eux la contrebasse a survécu 45 ans de plus, mais ils ont utilisé de la colle blanche pour recoller les fractures. La colle blanche, au delà d'être compliquée à enlever, reste toujours élastique. De fait, les fractures se sont réouvertes, et les doublures et autres taquets incrustés (grrrr) n'ont pas joué leur rôle. Avec le temps, la déformation est devenue de pire en pire....jusqu a en arriver là.
Pour être tout à fait honnête, je n'étais pas complètement satisfaite de mon travail. J'aurais préféré que la voûte revienne encore mieux, un peu plus rebondir encore.
Mais après des mois de travail minutieux, on repart tout de même sur des bases saines ! Elle sonne, et bien, c'est une contrebasse qui revient à la vie et c'est chouette.

Comme souvent, ce travail a été fait en collaboration avec mon ami et collègue Jeroen Bruynooghe. Pour moi, la restauration du coffre, et à lui le manche, le montage, les réglages etc...merci à lui et au musicien pour leur confiance.

I had company in the workshop this week!
Camille, a fellow violin maker, came from Paris for a 10 days internship. She wanted to practice restoration techniques.
I don't usually do this and I was a bit intimidated by the idea of teaching someone, but it was really a pleasure to work together. Camille is sweet, kind and gifted with her hands. We had a great time and I whish her all the best on her professional journey !

Cette semaine, j'avais de la compagnie à l'atelier !
Camille est venue de Paris pour 10 jours de stage, elle souhaitait se former à certaines techniques de restauration.
J'avais j'avoue un peu d'apprehension- moi ? Enseigner à quelqu'un ?- mais ça a vraiment été chouette. Camille est souriante et gentille, posée, aime ce qu'elle fait et sait pour sûr se servir de ces mains. Ce fut un plaisir de travailler ensemble et je lui souhaite tout de bon pour la suite !
