I’ve been pretty busy today, I finished putting down all the big grey used water pipes in the cellar and then I moved on to something more fun… working on my little mud kitchen… I was given two beautiful hand carved African doors.. I’m using one of them in my mud kitchen…

A special treat for the boys … our wonderful local organic baker gave us his unsold bread for the boys. They absolutely love the treat and I love listening to them chomp…

I felt like I was in the 1994 film Shawshank Redemption! If you’ve watched the film, you’ll understand what I mean. I had to dig through an 80cm stone wall !! It’s in preparation for the plumbing and electrical cables .. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’ll learn as the days go by.

A very busy Sunday … The morning was dedicated to my vegetable patch with Zeus’s help! Thinking about how to set it up, I’ve never grown vegetables before! It’s going to be fun. Mid afternoon, with Zeus’s support, I cleaned up the yellow branches. I want to try to weave them with the poles of the pergola, it’s temporary, until the plants grow and cover the whole structure. very busy Sunday … The morning was dedicated to my vegetable patch with Zeus’s help! Meet JIVE - he’s a rescue horse that would absolutely love to adopt! I was at the rescue centre this afternoon helping out with the feeding. What an organisation to feed 145 horses, about 10 donkeys, 2 sheep and lama! It was pouring with rain, the 4x4 was having a hard time with the mud, it was knee deep in some part and extremely sticky. I’ve been Jive’s godmother for a couple of months, so he doesn’t know me. Once everyone was fed and it was time to leave (I still had 2 hours drive to get home) I thought I’d quickly go and see him. Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would leave his herd and come to me! He doesn’t know me, he’s never heard my voice and he came to me. It was pouring, my jacket was soaked through, he was caked in mud, it was difficult to leave, to say goodbye .. I got home at 8:30pm

The boys were such stars .. They worked a little today, they carried some very long bright yellow branches I collected for the pergola I’m building next to my outdoor kitchen. These two boys know the difference between a walk and work! When we’re out for a walk, they never miss an opportunity to chomp on a clump of grass or some chestnuts in the forest, but once they have something on their back, they become very serious and focused, it’s such fun seeing the transformation. It made working in the drizzle worthwhile…

My mini mud outdoor kitchen … I decided to first build this outdoor kitchen as a trial run for the project I’ve taken on of converting a stone cellar into a studio. Building this little structure took me 2 months !! I finished just before Christmas. I thought something this tiny would be quick. Nope, nothing is quick and easy. I was also dependent on help for some very heavy elements, like the stone floor. I went into the forest to find the wood. We have a lot of chestnut trees that have partially died, their wood is perfect for outdoors. Hauling all that wood up the slopes to the road was tough. The big grey bricks were also so heavy. And the old roof tiles, that’s another story… I’ve rendered the walls with clay and straw (a neighbour 10 minutes away has clay in one of his fields) My first attempts with my clay mix were a bit lumpy, but I’m getting the hang of it now… I fell in love with the mud houses in Ladakh, they were so beautiful, and everyone who was with me knew that my dream would be to live in one of those houses …. I have to admit that I’m proud of my little ‘Mud House’ even though it doesn’t look anything like a Ladakhi House and it’s not completely made of mud…. I still have to put in the counter top and the shelves, but my priority now is to work on the cellar… I would like it finished by May!

D U S T D U S T D U S T … So much dust! I had to sweep up decades of dust to actually see what the ground looked like. I found a lot of flat stones, which I was not expecting and rock. The cellar built partly on a huge rock.
