Ooh… give us a twirl!

And this is certainly a clock worth seeing from every angle.

Made by Edwards of Stourbridge and retailed by George Rossi of Norwich, this fine 8-day skeleton clock leaves very little hidden. Its twin chain fusee movement sits between beautifully pierced scrolling plates, with six-crossed train wheels and a rack strike sounding the hours on a bell.

Two fine London bracket clocks, both dating from the 18th century and separated by just a few years – Robert Higgs in mahogany, circa 1770, and Joseph Lum in an ebonised case, circa 1765.

Both retain their original verge escapements, strike the hours on a bell and feature beautifully engraved backplates, but each has a character very much its own.

More is more, on this occasion…

This French Four Glass mantel clock from around 1900 is certainly not short on detail. Pegasus mounts decorate the case, Doric-style columns finish with unusual tulip-shaped bases, and delicate painted swags surround the enamel dial.

Even the pendulum gets its share of attention, with a finely painted enamel portrait encircled by rhinestones.

Behind all that decoration is a quality 8-day French movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell.

Sometimes, a little extravagance is entirely justified.

225 years old and still looking sharp…

This handsome Thwaites & Reed bracket clock dates from around 1800, with a beautifully proportioned case, painted dial and finely cut gilt hands.

Inside, the robust twin fusee movement retains its original verge escapement, while the backplate is particularly lovely – engraved with a basket of fruit surrounded by symmetrical foliate scrolls.

A very smart clock from every angle.

When getting there is half the fun…

This limited edition ‘Congreve’ rolling ball clock by Thwaites & Reed takes a rather more entertaining approach to timekeeping.

Watch as the ball makes its way along the pivoting runway, controlling the escapement as it goes. The three silvered chapter rings display the hours, minutes and seconds, while the substantial single fusee movement keeps everything in motion.

Is it the most accurate way to tell the time? No. Is it one of the most fascinating to watch? We think so.

Doing things his own way…

This small longcase clock by Smith of Chester has a few interesting details that set it apart.

Both the movement and dial are unusual for the period, with features that appear to have been particular to Smith’s work – giving us a fascinating glimpse into a clockmaker who wasn’t simply following the usual formula.

Throw in its smaller proportions and handsome case, and it’s a clock well worth a closer look.

A remarkable clock by a maker whose reputation clearly kept plenty of people busy…

Richard Baker was actually fined by the Clockmakers' Company for employing more apprentices than the rules allowed!

This magnificent late 17th-century longcase shows exactly why his work was in such demand. From the beautifully coloured bird and flower marquetry and barley twist columns to the finely engraved brass dial, it's a wonderful example of English clockmaking from its golden age.

These two photographs tell quite a story.

Our customer inherited this bracket clock from their late father in Canada. Before it came to us, arrangements were made locally for the clock to be packed and shipped to the UK. Unfortunately, it was sent with the movement still inside the case and, during transit, the movement broke free, causing extensive damage to both the case and the clock itself.

The photograph on the right shows the same clock after a full restoration. Careful repairs to both the movement and the case returned it to the condition the owner had hoped to see.

We ship clocks safely all over the world, so it's always a shame to see the consequences when proper packing methods haven't been followed – but immensely satisfying to be able to put things right.
