Welcome to The Rail Weigh! 🩷

I'm Amanda, I love astrophysics, astronomy, musical theatre, sign language and Star Trek!

I opened The Rail Weigh 6 years ago to help you save money and reduce plastic and although this is my business page you might hear me talking about any of my other passions too, especially Star Trek! 😁🖖🏻

The peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower is in a few hours!
Best viewed after midnight, all you need to do is get a deck chair or blanket, lie down and look up!
Avoid using your phone as it ruins your night vision, your eyes need around 20 minutes to get used to looking at the dark sky, as soon as you look at your phone screen it ruins that and needs more time to get used to the dark again! You'll see much more if you let your eyes adjust.
You don't need to go anywhere high up or even particularly super dark, you'll still see a few from most places.
It's the perfect night because the moon has already set so it's not lighting up the sky!

The Perseid Meteor Shower happens because earth passes through the trail of dust and debris from comet 109/P Swift / Tuttle. You can sometimes see bright meteors with long trains, mostly white or yellow but can be other colours like green, pink, orange or purple.

You don't need a telescope, just your eyes!

Solar Eclipse - how to watch with young kids!

But just a quick fact before that..
The Sun is 400x bigger than the moon
The Sun is 400x further away from earth than to the moon, which makes for a perfect eclipse!

The moon is slowly moving away from earth at 3.8cm per year. In a few hundreds of millions of years, solar eclipses won't be anywhere near as spectacular because the moon will appear tiny in comparison to how it looks now. We're in such a great time for eclipses!

Parents / carers with young children 🧡
Tonight around 6:30pm put the glasses on yourself and look at the shape
Draw the shape on a piece of paper. Explain the missing bit is where the moon is between us and the sun
Put the glasses on your little one, make sure they don't touch the lenses with their fingers or scratch them.
They'll look at the sun and recognize the shape you've drawn.
In 5-10 minutes do it again to see how the shape is changing.
It lasts over an hour so there's plenty of time to repeat this a few times 😊🌞

Enjoy safely and never look at the sun without a solar filter, it's not worth risking your eyesight. Eyes are precious, look after them 😊

1000ft up walking the infinity bridge was more a mental challenge than a physical one, not easy when it was wobbling! Wish I could have admired the view a little more but I was concentrating so hard on where my feet were going and making sure I didn't fall off! Pretty sure it would have been easier in thick socks than big bulky walking shoes 😊 Really glad I did it!
