1936 Buffalo Five Cent 🦬 🇺🇸

According to the legend, the bison used as a model for this coin was “Black Diamond” (1893-1915), a famous bison at the Central Park zoo in New York City.

The Buffalo nickel, or Indian Head nickel, is a copper-nickel 5-cent coin minted by the US Mint from 1913 to 1938. Designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, it is widely celebrated for its depiction of Native American heritage and an American Bison.

1943 Wartime Steel One Cent and 1944 “Shell Case” One Cent 🇺🇸

During World War II, a massive wartime shortage of copper prompted the U.S. Mint to substitute traditional bronze for a new zinc-coated steel composition. This allowed copper to be diverted for vital military equipment and ammunition, such as bullets and artillery shells.

The “Shell Case” Cents (1944–1946): The steel pennies produced in 1943 were widely unpopular because the public frequently mistook them for dimes and the coins tended to rust. To preserve the traditional appearance, the U.S. Mint started collecting spent brass from battlefields and training grounds to melt down. From 1944 to 1946, they struck cents using this reclaimed copper/brass alloy.
