A solid and well-made example, finished in black with gilt lining and hand-painted “POST OFFICE” lettering to the front. Fitted with its original key and a lift-out internal tray with compartments for sorting coins. A practical piece originally used for cash handling, now a strong decorative item with clear period character. Lock present but not fully working. Key included.

RARE FIND!! “One of the earliest and most important accounts of life on St. Kilda - published in 1753.”

A Voyage to St. Kilda, Martin Martin, Fourth Edition, 1753.

First published in the late 17th century, Martin Martin’s account of St. Kilda remains one of the most important early descriptions of life on Britain’s most remote inhabited islands. Written following his visits to the archipelago, the book documents the landscape, wildlife, customs, beliefs and daily lives of the islanders at a time when St. Kilda remained largely isolated from the outside world.

This 1753 fourth edition includes an engraved map and illustrations, offering a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that would eventually disappear with the evacuation of St. Kilda in 1930.

A remarkable piece of Scottish history, combining travel writing, natural history and ethnography in a volume that remains highly sought after by collectors of Scottish antiquarian books.
