Weekly Report
25th May to 31st May, 2026

Fishing less predictable but big catches still to be had. All four lakes stocked yesterday.

After many successive weeks of perfect fishing the weather has dealt a slight downturn in returns. It had to happen.

Some days have been exceptional but others have been very tricky.

No question the hot days have caused the downturn, but its looking fresher later in the week, after a potential clearing of the air with thunder and lightening possible.

Experienced anglers will already know this, but to any beginners, fly rods are excellent electrical conductors, which makes fishing dangerous during a storm.

If you see lightening, please put the rods down until the weather has passed. Have a break in the lodge or sit in the car.

On the right days, we’ve still had some special fishing, with dry flies once again dominating. It may not surprise you to hear the Beetle remains the top pattern.

As mentioned last week, the time of the year and the muggy conditions may bring on hatches of Caenis (see photos) in the evenings. Quite a spectacle if you encounter one and the trout switch on👌The fishing might not be easy, and one idea is to pull an unweighted lure through the top couple of inches. The speed is to keep the fly very high in the water, where the fish will inevitably be.

We’ve also seen the flash of blue of the first damsels of the season, although not in big numbers yet. Keep your ears pinned back for the cuckoo as well.

On Saturday, we welcomed the Stirling Club down from Scotland - thank you to all for using Chatton for your outing and we hope you enjoyed the fishery and the day. Congratulations to top rod S Leyden 👌

As you might have seen, all four lakes were stocked yesterday, including a nice surprise or two 😀 Check out the videos of the fish going in.

Finally, special mention to Colin Smith who was staying on the caravan site and booked a half day lesson to improve his casting. Which he did incredibly well and put to good use immediately, landing a 5lb rainbow on a Nothing Fly and #4 rod, which he said was properly hooped over. The successful area was the infeed on Ross Lake. Well done Colin.

Details of how to book lessons are in the Noticeboard below. These can cover anything, with most people wanting to focus on catching more fish or improve their casting. It certainly worked for Colin. You don’t need to have fished before either - beginners are catered for and all tackle is supplied.

Weekly Report
18th May to 24th May, 2026

Memory making fishing continues. All four lakes stocked again. Dries out-fishing everything.

Have a look at the weekly catches below and you’ll see dries have formed 95% of all the top performers last week. It doesn’t get much more conclusive than that.

Once again Beetles have been top dogs, but if your fly floats, you have a great chance of catching.

Keeping the size down might help when it comes to beetles as the naturals we get are pretty small. Size 16 down to 20 should do. Brown being the best colour.

If the Hawthorns are about, try a Size 14.

With the expected weather predicted for this coming week, we expect surface sport to continue at a very high level, yet again.

Its not just Beetles and Hawthorns either. We’re getting all sorts hatching, so your are in contention for takes with CDCs, Sedges, Hoppers, Top Hats or Griffiths Gnats. The lakes are extremely healthy and you don’t really know whats going to start hatching next.

If the fish is head and tail rising, cast in front of it by a yard or two and hope it doesn’t change direction. Less flies on the surface mean direction change is less likely. But if the surface is covered, fish will change direction all the time, which can be a little annoying.

Speaking of which, we are very close to Caenis season, which can drive anglers potty but also demonstrate just how many fish are in the lakes. June is prime time for these flies and muggy/thundery weather will see you get covered in them in the evenings. Watch out for small white/grey things landing on your arms - the good news is they don’t bite.

On one of the less pleasant weather days, we once again welcomed the Chatton Cadence Codgers. As you may have seen in a previous post, they had some fantastic fishing with a rod average of just under 10. Dries dominating catches as expected. Considering half the day will have been spent gassing, its not a bad return 😀 Well done lads and great to have you once again.

With the later finishes, Wednesday Night Clubs discounted ticket is starting to get more popular - details in Noticeboard below. Why not come along tomorrow and try it?

On Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting the Chatton Cadence Codgers monthly meet. Slightly less in numbers this month due to the dodgy forecast. The 14 who braved the conditions saw some fantastic sport with a rod average of 9.2 per rod and no blanks. Not bad for a bunch of old codgers ehhhh!!!! 😉

Weekly Report
11th May to 17th May, 2026

Dries dominate yet again. Hawthorn Flies expected in bigger numbers this coming week.

Yet again, catches have been superb and again Beetles and Hawthorns are still your top patterns, but change is in the air with a warmer forecast and lighter winds.

This may make the hatches even bigger and the fish more active. Or the bright sun may put them down. We really don’t know. The guess would be we’ll get more mega rises, but nature will decide that.

If the fish aren’t on top when you arrive, it might be worth considering dropping deeper than has been necessary of late. And indictor may become a decent method in the calmer conditions.

Road Works
Happening in Chatton Village and signposted as ‘Road Closure’ from the A1. Please ignore this regards the fishery - you will get to us no bother. There is no need to take the diversion route.
