WEEKLY REPORT
31st Aug to 6th Sept 2026

Still fishing ok. Lakes back to full levels.

Fishing continues to be steady away. Still better than the heat of August, with most anglers now catching.

We haven’t yet seen the re-emergence of the hundreds of fish that have most likely holidayed in the middle of the lakes out of sight during the summer. But when they do it will be spectacular. The water still likely needs to drop a degree or two but we’re heading in the right direction.

Even so, we’re at a stage where catches are getting fairly consistent. Dries remain by far the best overall option and smaller ones in the main.

Richard Green had a beautiful big 7lb brownie off the surface during a session he had 9 fish on sedges and daddies.

Good news on the water levels is the recent rain has brought every lake back up to maximum and we now have a little more water recycling going on. The other positive is the chances of seeing Daddy Longlegs increases from the moisture in the ground.

If you get a few of those when you’re fishing the sun won’t keep the fish off the surface then. Be prepared with a couple of foam daddies just in case. Colour doesn’t seem to matter as theres been a few quirky colours used to success recently - yellow, orange, black or natural will all work.

With the water still pretty clear, smaller imitative nymphs will most likely out fish the bigger versions.

Bait Lake
Reddis has continued to fish very well with anglers prepared to move and find the fish generally doing better than those sitting still.

Smaller baits fished deeper are still doing best.

Before you buy a ticket on Reddis Bait Lake, please be aware all fish must be killed as part of your ticket. Additional ones over your limit of 3 must be paid for. You must make sure you have a means of quickly killing the fish before starting and you absolutely must kill the fish before unhooking or photographing. Leaving a fish to flap around while you ask other people for help is not good enough. If you don’t have a priest to kill them immediately, please do not buy a ticket.

We are aware that the lake attracts beginners and are more than happy to help those who are unsure before they start - please feel free to ask before these situations arise.

Not too bad. Winds generally expected to be light to medium from a westerly direction most of the week. Temperatures mostly around 17-18 degrees with a mix of sun, cloud and showers. Maybe a couple of one off warmer days on Monday and Tuesday and a little breezier on Sunday.

Fishing improving.

New closing time.

For the first time in a few weeks, the fishing is at last improving 👌

We can thank the slightly cooler weather for this, and with sub 20 degrees forecast we expect another similar week upcoming. As long as we don’t get any heatwaves, fishing should continue to improve little by little.

Its once again been a week where naturals have dominated, with small dries or buzzers your best bet. Try the ever consistent Nothing Fly or if you prefer something bigger to watch, Daddies are certainly doing a good job in the cloudier spells.

New closing time is now 8.30pm as darkness arrives earlier. Opening time is always 8.30am.

Fishing still tough.

Another similar week, with fishing still on the tricky side of good. Fish remain catchable if you time it right, but its not a given.

Most anglers are checking out with 2,3 or 4 fish which is steady away for the time of year.

Most of those are using dries, with Black Gnats, Top Hats and Nothing Flies the pick.

Days with less sunshine are nearly always best if you prefer fishing on the surface.

And if it is sunny, fishing deep is generally the best way.

At times it feels like we have the whole UK population of Swallows over us - on most evenings, they’ve been swarming in their thousands. Sometimes over a particular lake. One night Dunnydeer had none over it while they were all over Ross and Chatton Lakes. An incredible sight (See video in comments)

Reddis Bait Lake continues to fish quite well, but anglers who have done best have had to think their fish out - fishing deep has certainly been best.

Can anglers fishing Reddis please make sure they kill their fish properly before unhooking and if you are unsure how to do this, ask in the lodge.

Any fish caught on the fly lakes on catch and release tickets MUST be unhooked in the water. Any angler seen putting the fish on the ground prior to release will be asked to leave.

WEEKLY REPORT
10th Aug to 16th Aug, 2026

New closing time, positive forecast, all lakes being stocked this week

In another week of harder than average fishing, its great to see a cooler and more trout friendly forecast. It feels like we’re past the worst of the heat now.

The lakes will take a while to fully cool off, so the fishing won’t fully switch on immediately, but we’re heading in the right direction for some bumper catches over the next couple of months.

Fish that have lain dormant in the deep water will appear from nowhere one day and we’ll be off and running like back in April and May. (Some of the most incredible fly fishing ever).

This weeks best tactics have once again focussed on fishing deep through the day, which Alec Harvey and Barry Nicholson did catching well on fast sinkers and zonkers in the middle of a sunny day. A little experience goes a long way and both lads deserved their rewards.

Alec had a lovely 7lb rainbow from the second point of Dunnydeers Dam Wall, which was in cracking condition. (See photos).

The really hot spell of last week saw brown flying ants littering the surface of Dunnydeer along the Ross Lake bank according to Ben Blake. With fish keen to sweep them up. You’d need to be at Size 18-20 to match the hatch though.

Theres a reasonable chance of some Daddy Longlegs falling this next couple of weeks, so be prepared with a foam daddy or two just in case (available to buy in the Lodge if you run out).

As we enter the final 6 weeks of the Caravan Park season, don’t forget you can book your hardstanding pitch through the link in the ‘Noticeboard’ below. We have 11 pitches available and fishing access to your front door is yards away.

Dries or bust. Late night or bust. More browns showing.

Another tricky August week. Anglers staying until closing are doing by far the best and some nights the fish have been taking pretty freely in some fairly classical dry fly summer nights. Overall its been tough going though.

Top angler of the week goes to 11 year old Leo who landed 4 fish in a 4hr lesson with Stuart Ingledew Fly Fishing. In his first ever attempt, Leo learned the basics of casting, striking and playing fish while the sun was up and put it all into practice when they switched on towards dark. Quite incredibly he learned so quickly he was able to cast at moving fish and land them himself on a small Top Hat. Which he chose based on the flies on the water. Not bad for one so young and we think he’s going to be a star angler on the lakes in future. Well done Leo.

Chris Mclachlan did really well in the late evening landing 8, including 2 Browns up to 6lb on Daddies. Chris was staying on the caravan park and was able to take advantage of the late closing without a drive home. Top fishing Chris.

It wasn’t just one catch that included Brownies. For some reason they have switched on a little this past couple of weeks and several anglers have caught them. Hardly prolific, but noticeable how they disappear then reappear for no obvious reason. Dries have been best.

Any anglers fishing through the day have once again struggled and its worth pointing out the short term forecast points to it getting even harder. Thursday in particular looks like a grueller whether you’re on the fly or bait lakes. We’d suggest staying at home if catching is top of your list. Sun bathing should be good though.

We’ll obviously keep an eye on water temperatures and post on here if it gets too high for fish welfare, but the expectation is we’ll remain open for those crackers enough to fish the sunniest days 😀 The weather has been cool enough lately and the hope is the heat won’t last long enough to take it above the critical 19-20 degrees.

Hot till Thursday night and hopefully cooling thereafter. The weekend looks ok on paper but how well it fishes depends on how much the water warms beforehand. Based purely on the forecast, its not a sustained hot spell with only Thursday expected to be really hot - meaning it shouldn’t have a huge effect on water temperatures, but we’ll have to see. Nature will decide that.

WEEKLY REPORT
27th July to 2nd Aug, 2026

Deep through the day, dries towards dark. All four lakes stocked once again.

It might not be outstanding fishing, but its not too bad for August. We’ll take this.

For those who don’t fish much, hot and humid weather aren’t a trouts best friend. Sunshine and heat are the worst combination and a simple summary is they feed less and hide away in deeper, cooler water. Thankfully the lower temperatures and more infrequent sun are slowly having a positive effect on the lakes, but its still tough overall.

If you are fishing during light winds and cloud cover, the fish seem more willing to rise to small dries during the day now. But those windows are small and daytime fishing remains tricky. Its certainly better than the heat wave though.

Stay on till dark and things will change for the better on the calmer nights with some nice rises to small midge, some sedges and even a few Caenis. Its the midge that have been the main focus, and the nearer to dark you get (while still being able to see) the easier it gets. Fish have been taking small dries quite confidently.

Ross Lake still has an algal bloom, but remains the best lake for fly anglers. We had one day in particular quite a few brown trout were caught.

If you do fish during the day, an indicator fished much deeper than normal will be your best bet with a smaller than standard fly. Try an Egg perhaps and keep changing depths and positions regularly.

Fish have been well spread on Reddis Bait Lake and anglers using smaller hooks and baits with lighter floats will do best at the moment.

WEEKLY REPORT
20th-26th July, 2026

Improved fishing expected. All lakes stocked. Dries and late evenings best.

We had some very localised and torrential rain on Sunday, which was lovely to see. Not a huge amount managed to get into the lakes as the ground soaked it all up, but its a step in the right direction.

Combined with a slightly better forecast and the stocking of all the lakes, the expectation is for fishing to improve somewhat.

Fishing during the day continues to be hard work - we can’t spell it out more clearly. The fish simply go into hiding, become lethargic or feed very little. This applies to all four lakes. Anglers will struggle and most likely blank if they turn up for an afternoon session. You’ve been warned!

If you do fish through the day, an Indicator fished very deep is going to be your best bet.

Once again, its evening that has fished best with a couple of double figure catches. Zack Scott doing best with his catch of 14 on Top Hats on the surface and Cheese Minnows down deep. John Pringle also did well fishing a slightly unusual Yellow Daddy - top angling both of you.

Despite suffering an algal bloom, Ross Lake has certainly fished best, despite being a little unappetising on the eye. It certainly hasn’t bothered the fish in there. Chatton and Dunnydeer remain clear and w**d isn’t an issue due to ongoing clearances to keep on top of the situation.

Once again, stick to small dries towards dark, with Top Hats in Size 18-20 your best bet. Try one in a Wicked White or Hares ear dressing. Nothing Flies, Griffiths Gnats and Beetles in similar sizes will also catch.

Its a similar story under the surface, with very small nymphs and buzzers most likely to work.

FISHING FORECAST
Much better. Daytime temperatures expected to be 17-18 degrees for the week. Night temperatures could get as low as 7 degrees, which will really help with the fishing. Mix of sun, showers and cloud with winds light to medium from the W/SW. As a result, we would expect fishing to improve.
