This week’s shoutout goes to our Alnwick neighbour, The Market Place Butchery just around the corner from us on Paikes Street! ❤️

Their counter is always absolutely packed with everything from quality cuts of meat to homemade burgers, kebabs, stir-fries and some seriously good-looking ready-to-cook creations. 🤤

It’s another brilliant independent right on our doorstep, with plenty of choice and proper friendly local service.

So next time you’re popping in for your sweeties, make sure you have a nosey round the corner at Ben’s too! 🥩🍬

🍐 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🍬

Did you know the unmistakable smell of Pear Drops has a rather surprising connection to gas masks?! 😮

That familiar fruity smell is associated with a chemical called isoamyl acetate, sometimes known as banana oil. The smell is so distinctive that the chemical has actually been used to test the fit of respirators: if you can smell it through the mask, you know there’s a leak!

And during wartime, soldiers were taught to recognise unusual smells that could indicate poisonous gas with Pear Drops being one of the smells associated with gas warnings.

Quite a history behind one of the most recognisable jars in an old-fashioned sweet shop! 🍐❤️

👀 SOMETHING’S HAPPENING ON FENKLE STREET…

Our new sign is officially going up on the Fenkle Street side of our Alnwick shop! ❤️🍬

There’s still plenty to do, the outside needs a fresh lick of paint and we’ve got lots of work to do inside to get it looking just right, but it’s all starting to come together!

We’re hoping to have our Fenkle Street entrance back open by November, giving our lovely old building its two entrances once again. 🥹

Keep your eyes peeled… we’ll be sharing the progress as we go! 👀❤️

🍫 EVER WONDERED WHAT CHOC NIBS & CHOC LICK ACTUALLY ARE?

These two old-school favourites have always been a bit of a mystery… but they’re basically the odds, ends, crumbs and chocolatey bits from confectionery production, brought together rather than going to waste! ❤️

Choc Nibs are those wonderfully random little crunchy, chewy, chocolatey pieces which is why no two nibbles ever seem quite the same. Then you’ve got Choc Lick… the gloriously fine, crumbly, almost powdery chocolate mixture that generations of us remember buying in a paper bag and inevitably getting EVERYWHERE. 😂🍫

It’s essentially the ultimate old-fashioned waste-not-want-not sweet, all those delicious little chocolatey, biscuity bits given another lease of life.

And somehow, the scrappy bits ended up being just as good as the sweets they came from. 😂

Our Ross’s of Edinburgh Toffee Doodles are a proper old-fashioned favourite. little pieces of rich, hard toffee with that lovely deep caramel flavour. 🤎

One of those sweets you don’t see everywhere anymore, but the second you spot the jar you know exactly what you’re having! 😂

🍬 MEMORY LANE MONDAY 🍬

Here’s one we’re still not quite over… Candy Sticks! 😭

Or, depending on how far back your memories go, you might remember them better as Candy Ci******es / Sweet Ci******es. those little white sticks that generations of kids inevitably pretended to smoke before actually eating them! 😂

Sadly, Candy Sticks were discontinued by the manufacturer, disappearing alongside another of our much-loved classics, Coconut Mushrooms, which we lost in November 2025. 💔

We used to get asked for them ALL the time, and even now people still come in looking for them. Some sweets really do leave a gap when they disappear!

Who remembers buying these as Candy Ci******es and did you pretend to smoke yours first? 😂👇
