The Climbers Shop Opened in 1959 in Ambleside, within the heart of the Lake District. Partnered with Joe Brown Shops.

With an unofficial subtitle of 'Climb-Walk-Run', we strive to provide the best gear for all three activities and more. Stocking clothing, footwear and gear from Mountain Equipment, Rab, Montane, La Sportiva, Scarpa, Grivel, DMM, Petzl, Black Diamond, Edelrid, and tonnes more, we provide quality gear for a variety of outdoor activities. If you are after some outdoor clothing or outdoor gear and want to to be the best, then we should have the equipment to suit your needs. Even if we don't stock it at the time, we'll be more than happy to order it in for you. Operating still as a relatively small Lake District business, customer service is incredibly important to us and we will try our very best to accommodate your outdoor needs and requests, with minimal fuss.

If you’ve ever popped into the shop for trail running advice, you ve probably met Ali - our assistant manager and resident “never-not-running” human.
Last year she fastpacked the entire Cape Wrath Trail with our Director Cathy and their friend Hilary.
She’s already planning next year’s adventures (of course she is). Ali has completed the Lakeland 50 three times and attempted the Lakeland 100 twice - that’s 239 miles of actual race distance. Not bad!

Did you know?
Ali’s Round - our community fell running challenge — is named after her. She came up with the idea, mapped it out, and inspired the whole thing. You can find the full story on our grid & our blog.

Favourite fell: Kentmere Horseshoe... or Mellbreak.

Favourite piece of kit: Montane Featherlite Jacket - “packs tiny, saves the day”.

Outdoor personality: Will push you into the puddle. Every time. With love.

Well… they have probably tried and tested the kit themselves.

One of our staff members has shared the images of their rock shoe collection over the years (this is a collection of two people who do trad, alpine, sport climbing and bouldering).

And before you say this is an excessive amount of rock shoes, some of these are old and to be retired! But yes, we agree…
