Dodging the rain today, the Ghyllside Audax is a great all rounder for any distance, steel is most definitely real!

Continuing our historical journey, the shop began around 1961 in a garage underneath a house in Rattle Ghyll, the house was and still is called Ghyllside. A chap called Ernie was the brains behind the operation and was a bit of an eccentric by all accounts. He was known for riding his invention a ‘mini farthing’ around the village and began his career in the cycle trade working in another bike shop in the village.

1981 and 2026, very little has changed in The Slack after 45 years, we were all astonished to find this wonderful period photo on a random Google search. Courtesy of Purley High School, fabulous to compare and contrast. The two kids sat on our window sill look rather bored as they wait patiently for the ‘fettling’ to be over!

Some Sunday mud-plugging on the Surly Ice Cream Truck today around Orton Fells. There are some great bridleways, definitely worth a visit.

Some winter riding in the glorious North Pennines, starting at Middleton in Teesdale, then Stanhope, Weardale and then into Forest in Teesdale, and back to Middleton. 31 miles and some of the best scenery in the U.K. The Ghyllside Audax 653 was the perfect tool for the job!

Braving the rain today on the Ghyllside Audax, an old school poncho kept everything except my feet dry - a useful lesson from the past! We still have a few of these amazing Reynolds 653 framesets in stock, contact us if you’re interested in one, there will unfortunately be no more once they’re gone!
