Very nice Tokai Love Rock in at The Woodshed at the moment!

Japanese built, beautifully finished and in seriously clean condition. A proper classic single-cut with a gorgeous flame top, loads of that vintage Les Paul character, and the sort of build quality that’s earned Japanese Tokais such a loyal following over the years.

Definitely one to come and get your hands on.

With some of the big guitar shops disappearing, people naturally wonder what’s happening to the industry, and we get asked a lot about it in the shop by our visitors.

Are fewer people playing? Are young people still picking up guitars? Is the market struggling? And what does the future look like for guitar?

After two and a half years behind the counter at The Woodshed, we’ve got our own little window into it. And we’ve watched a proper local guitar community grow around us.

So we decided to write about what we’re actually seeing — not from an industry report or anything like that, but from behind the counter of a proper independent guitar shop.

We’ve bought a lot of guitars, sold a lot of guitars, met a lot of brilliant people — and learned a fair bit along the way.

Our latest blog is a look at the guitar industry from where we’re standing: what we’ve noticed, what’s changing, and what running an independent guitar shop has taught us about the people who actually buy, sell and play these things.

A quick update on The Woodshed app!

First off, we’re absolutely over the moon to know that so many of you are actually using our app! 🙌

Unfortunately, we’re having some minor technical issues with it at the moment, but our provider is on the case and working to get everything sorted as soon as possible.

Apologies to anyone who’s been enjoying the benefits of the app, we’ll let you know as soon as everything is back up and running!

We survived for two years without an app, so we reckon we’ll survive a brief spell with it being down. 🤞

Strat, Les Paul, PRS or something totally different? 🤔

It can be a difficult decision when you’re still getting a feel for things — which direction do you go in?

Louis was on the hunt for his first proper guitar, so we spent some time trying a few different types and figuring out what felt right. There was plenty he liked, and as we said at the time, they’re all great guitars — they just do different things.

But he kept coming back to this beautiful 2005 Fender Stratocaster in Olympic White.

Based on his influences and the sort of music he likes to play, we reckon he made the right choice. As an all-rounder, a good USA Strat is seriously hard to beat — incredibly versatile, comfortable, familiar, and with that unmistakable bit of Strat sparkle when you want it.

These guitars are all pre-owned, and they're all immaculate! 👀

We try to avoid the term “as new” when describing preloved guitars — it can be a problematic phrase in retail…

But sometimes it’s very tempting to use it...

Here are just some of our pre-owned guitars that if we'd ordered ourselves and they turned up in this condition, we'd be hard pressed to know they'd ever had a previous owner.

As a shop that specialises in preloved guitars, we're incredibly lucky to have instruments like these coming through the door.

In fact, people are often surprised to learn that the majority of the electric guitars on our walls are second hand.

Some arrive with us looking exactly like this — incredibly well kept and looked after by their previous owners.

Some were bought with every intention of learning… and then barely ever played.

We've even bought guitars that were won in competitions and virtually never touched.

Others definitely don't arrive looking like this 😅…

…but after some time and attention in the workshop, it's amazing how well some guitars can come back.

We love selling guitars, but we love buying them too — so thank you to everyone who chooses The Woodshed when it's time to sell or trade an instrument. ❤️

It's a privilege to have so many guitars come and go through the shop.

Two sides of The Woodshed 📸🔧

While one of us is busy making the guitars look good, the other is busy making sure they play as good as they look!

A little behind-the-scenes snapshot of a day at The Shed. Cameras and lighting one side of the wall, tools and guitars the other.

This new space has changed the way we work. Having more room means we're getting new arrivals photographed and onto the website quicker, while setups and repairs have seen a dramatically improved turnaround time. 🔧

So if you've been keeping an eye on the website, you'll probably have noticed plenty of new guitars appearing lately, and there's lots more still to come! Likewise, if you've got a guitar that's been putting off a visit to the bench, now is the time!

It's taken a lot of work to get The Woodshed to where it is now, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone locally who keeps coming through the doors, recommending us, engaging with us on socials to help our reach, bringing us their guitars and generally supporting what we're building here.

We love this shop more than you can know. ❤️
