Did you see Saving Country Houses on Channel 4 last night? An absolutely huge loft model railway! Fabulous - a railway modellers heaven. We've never seen so many Gaugemaster controllers in one place!

One for local people - or for visitors to the area....

Our lovely local heritage railway Littlehampton Miniature Railway has a steam gala for their 10th anniversary next weekend. Its a wonderful miniature railway running along the sea front. Well worth a visit.

The last visit for this week was to:

MODEL SHOP NORTHWICH
167 Witton Street, Northwich, CW9 5EA

The journey from Manchester through to Chester takes you through a lovely part of Cheshire and one of those places is Northwich. On the way into the town centre from the station is The Model Shop which is small but perfectly formed.

It’s fair to say that you won’t find a huge amount of RTR locomotives or rolling stock but there is a good selection of accessories (especially Metcalfe card kits) and all those vital paints and brushes. There is also a small selection of model kits too.

David has been in the game for a long time and given that he is now into his 80s and still running the shop on his own, tells you everything about how much he loves the business.

Manchester for us today and the first stop is:

The Locoshed Models and Collectables Manchester

48 Bury Old Road, Whitefield, Manchester, M45 6TL

Close to the magnificently named tram stop Besses o’ th’ Barn, you will receive the warmest of welcomes from Jim and his team when you arrived. Located in an attractive part of town with excellent road links and free parking, you’ll walk into a proper model railway shop with a smattering of model kits.

Packed with new and second hand trains from all the usual suppliers, there are well priced bargains to be had and while I was there some decent patter with the customers who were kind to this particular soft southerner.

So if you’re round these parts, do pop in as you will not leave empty handed!

Our last stop today was to:

Nuffy’s Models

58 Great Moor Street, Bolton, BL1 1SN

When the offer came to open a model shop at the same location as the retiring Bolton Model Mart, young entrepreneur (and proprietor) James jumped at the change and Nuffy’s Models was born.

Exceptionally well presented, this store contains new and second hand model railways as well as model kits and radio control alongside a wide selection of modelling materials

So if you’re ever in Bolton, a visit is recommended particularly as the shop is easily accessible, being a 10min walk from Bolton Interchange and the main station.

If you get to visit, you’ll also get the chance to see a huge collection of mint boxed model kits which contain a few rarities so if that’s your thing, give them a call or pop in.

Our thanks also extend to James for an excellent cup of tea or ‘brew’ as they say round these parts 😉 as well as letting me charge up my dead phone!

Ashton models
Unit 21 Greensway Shopping Centre, 34 Gerard Street, Ashton-in-Makerfield, WN4 9AE

Located in Ashton, which isn’t far from Wigan (and it’s two ridiculously close railway stations) this shop is located within a shopping centre on a thriving high street which is in the process of being improved still further.

Stuart’s impressive shop is packed with new and pre owned model railways as well as model kits and modelling materials as well as some radio control. It was refreshingly busy while we were there with people who had travelled from the wider Manchester area and with plentiful FREE parking in the large public car park behind the shop, you can see why.

This is a local policy we can certainly get behind. I guess it helps to have friends in high places if you’re the local MP for Ashton in Makerfield…
