A lot of emotional and mindfulness work with children can end up being quite verbal, lots of talking, lots of asking how something feels.

But for many children, that's actually the hardest way in, especially if they find it difficult to tune into their body or put feelings into words.

That's why sensory, hands-on exploration is such a valuable part of what I do, real objects to touch, smell, taste and listen to, rather than just conversation about the idea of the senses. It meets children where they actually are, and for some, it says far more than words ever could.

When did you last do something that was just for you?

Not for the kids. Not for work. Not because it needed doing. Something you chose because it made YOU feel good.

If you're struggling to remember, this is for you.

Art Box Art Nights are relaxed evening classes in Headcorn for women who want a few hours that are entirely, unapologetically theirs. Bring a friend, bring a bottle, leave everything else at the door.

You'll make something beautiful with your hands. You'll laugh. You'll talk. You'll go home feeling lighter than when you arrived.

Not because art fixes everything. But because doing something creative gives your brain the space it's been quietly asking for.

Coming up:

🎨 Painting Evening - Friday 11th September
🎃 Pumpkin Making - Friday 16th October
🍂 Artisan Christmas Bowls - Friday 13th November

Another gratitude tree is finished!

Over the last couple of sessions, leaf by leaf has been written and drawn on with the things children feel genuinely grateful for, and tying each one onto the branches. It's a lovely, simple way to practise something that doesn't come naturally to any of us all the time, noticing what's good, without needing everything else to be perfect first.

Gratitude isn't about pretending difficult things aren't difficult, it's simply choosing, to recall what we do feel thankful for.

A tree that grows fuller every time a new gratitude is added to it ❤️

Another lovely exercise in the summer creative mindfulness classes was this one…

We made a paper flower, and in the centre wrote: "When my emotions feel big, I can..." Then filled each petal in the children’s own idea, things like going for a walk, having something to eat or drink, or talking to a friend. Six petals, six things that are theirs, ready and waiting for whenever a big feeling shows up.

It's a small thing to make, but it becomes something real to reach for when they need it 🌸🌼

I came downstairs this morning and couldn't help but smile. 😄

Staring back at me from my carft desk were two unfinished gratitude trees from my creative mindfulness class and this guy!

I'm calling him a goose. Possibly a heron. Definitely not a duck. Whatever he is, he made me laugh out loud at 7am and that felt like a gift.

He's made from scraps of fabric, a water bottle and absolutely zero planning. I saw something on social media about making creatures from water bottles and thought, YES! Obviously. And so here he is.

And here's the thing about creativity that I don't think we talk about enough:

The joy doesn't just happen in the moment of making. It stays. It's there in the morning when you come downstairs and something you made is just sitting there being ridiculous and wonderful. It's in the unfinished things that remind you there's more to come. It's in the complete randomness of what your hands decide to make when you just let them.

I have approximately fifty million water bottles at the moment thanks to the endless heat wave water cut offs we've had over the last five weeks. So I am now officially turning them into art.

Next up, an actual duck. 🦆

Being creative doesn't have to be serious, planned or purposeful. Sometimes it's just a goose made of scraps that makes you smile before you've even had a coffee. And that's more than enough. 💛
