The Irondale Inn at Muirkirk was opened to the public in 1791 as part of the great new road from Glasgow to Dumfries, or Old Sanquhar Road, as we know it today. You can find out more about the 'Old Roadways of Ayrshire' in the book of that name by Dane Love.

On 30 July 1683 the brothers William and George Fullertoun of Fullarton, near Troon, were imprisoned for possible involvement at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, which took place between the Covenanters and the government troops on 22 June 1679. The trial was at Edinburgh on 2 April 1684 for ‘treasonable harbouring, recepting, conversing with and doing favours to rebels’. The prosecution did not appear to have enough evidence, and the accused were free to go. At Fullarton an old datestone of 1673 commemorates William Fullarton. See more about the Covenanters in the Troon and Dreghorn area in The Parish of Dreghorn by Karon Bell. www.carnpublishing.com/dreghorn
