Ring Slings! 🤩
Why A Ring Sling?

A ring sling can be a wonderful option when you & baby run warm. A single layer carry, there's less fuss, less fabric, less effort to get baby in the sling and secure.

🤔 What Are The Benefits Of A Ring Sling?
It's a lighter sling for you and for baby, and from a sensory perspective, it's just less 'stuff'. As they are lighter, they are ideal for washing and drying quickly.

🤔 What Size Of Ring Sling?
Buy for you - the length you need is based on your shirt/dress size, not the size of your baby. Medium tends to work for most people.

🤔 Are They Just For Newborns?
As there are lots of different weaves weights of ring slings available, they are a wonderful option for newborn and toddler-carrying!

🤔 Are They Machine Washable?
Yes! As most ring slings are 100% cotton, they can be laundered in a washing machine.

Babywearing Basics 🤓

Everything starts with safety and comfort, but it’s interesting to understand the ‘why carry?’

When we better understand baby’s expectations/behaviour, the knowledge encourages us to carry with confidence.

Babies are dependent on us. They expect close contact.

Generally speaking, keeping baby close & physically connected, increases parental sensitivity to baby’s needs - we learn to interpret movements,
noises and expressions much quicker.

Reduced crying, even by a little, reduces our stress and baby’s stress.
These bite-sized, easy-to-digest-when-you’re-a-tired-mamma babywearing basics will help you start carrying and keep carrying.

Look out for more of these every week.

Eminently Sensible Babywearing Advice 🤓

NEWBORNS:

If you're pregnant, have a newborn or know someone who does, please share this info with them. 🙌

In my experience as a Babywearing Consultant, I often find that the most important part of carrying happens before the sling.

It makes sense - the sling is a tool you use to maintain that loving touch, that connectivity whilst being mobile and active.

So the movements and handling before the sling are important.

Gentle movements and soft handling can make all the difference.

Support baby's newborn physiology.

Slow, reassuring movements. Take your time. Deep breaths. In through your nose. Fill your lungs.

It will be a much more pleasant experience for you both if you can avoid overly-firm, sudden and jerky movements.

Happy babywearing starts with safety and comfort.

Eminently Sensible Babywearing Advice 🤓

NEWBORNS:

If you're pregnant, have a newborn or know someone who does, please share this info with them. 🙌

Your baby should be in view, even in a buckle carrier.

Your baby’s head should be free and clear of the carrier.

What, even with a structured carrier?! Yes, even with a carrier.

If baby’s head is hidden by the top of carrier, then it either needs adjusted on your body or if it’s already sitting at the best spot on your body, then it just may not fit you and/or your newborn.

In a nutshell: Newborn buckle carriers will not fit every body & every baby.

Cold Weather Carrying - Newborn Tips 🤓 ❄️

Getting out with your newborn in this weather takes a little bit more thought:

- Keep extremities covered!
- No bulky snowsuits on baby or bulky scarves on you.
- Wrap up around you both.

❄️ COLD WEATHER CARRYING ❄️

The weather has turned cold at last!

Getting out with baby in a sling or carrier takes a little bit more thought.

When it's cold, keep extremities covered!

It can be deceptively cold at this time of year; no snow but cold enough to chill your bones, so keep extremities covered (head, hands & feet).

Have fun! There's no better place for your little one to experience the change of the seasons - the colours, sights and smells - than from the comfort of a sling, tucked up all snug and safe right next to you.

The Fourth Trimester & Babywearing ✨

It’s a cultural expectation that babies should settle away from you. It is not an infant expectation.

Babies expect to be carried. They expect to be held close to you. You are safety, warmth and comfort.

Babies need to be held, to feel safe, to be comforted.

This cultural expectation is deeply harmful to the mother/child dyad. It creates anxiety, feelings of inadequacy; an idea that somehow you’re doing something wrong because your baby won’t settle or sleep in a cot or crib.

It’s perfectly normal for babies to need close contact.

If your baby won’t settle away from you, it’s ok, it’s absolutely normal.
There is nothing ‘wrong’ with your baby, and there is nothing’ wrong’ with you.
It’s the cultural expectation of the mother/child relationship that’s wrong.

Keep holding your babies. 💖

Pro Tip Tuesday 😃

HALF BUCKLE SHOULDER FLIP

💛If you love a buckle carrier, but don’t love reaching for the back clip, or trying to tighten the webbing on side buckles, then a Half Buckle is the carrier for you. All the ease of a buckle-style carrier, with even more adjustability!
💛Half Buckles with wide wrap-strap shoulders - you can flip the shoulders to create a 'cupping' effect. This creates a more snug fit to the shoulder and can provide additional support and a comfier fit.
💛All of our Half Buckle Carriers can be used from newborn, in fact, they make for a really lovely option - they're snug, super-adjustable and soft. What's more, some models can be used all through baby, toddler to preschool age.

Ring Slinging With A Newborn 🤓

Ring Slings offer a lovely, single layer carrying option. From a sensory perspective, this can be wonderful for both baby or wearer or both. Less bulk, less fabric.

In terms of using a ring sling, there is a bit of technique involved. Here’s some helpful hints to get you started:

💖 Use the pouch to set the seat - some call it a perch, a rope, or a band - use it by setting it behind baby's knees, in a straight line from one knee to the other. This will help create that nice deep seat that you want.

💖 Only walk just enough fabric up baby’s back, i.e. only just enough to the bottom of baby's neck.

💖 When adjusting the fabric (either up baby's back or through the rings), always try to lift baby's weight - imagine you're doing the robot dance - your arm is bent at the elbow so that your forearm is in a horizontal line and parallel with baby's bottom.

💖 Supporting baby in this way will ease the pressure of the fabric in the rings of the sling, allowing it to be more easily adjusted.

💖 Always work any excess fabric from around your back towards the rings.
💖 Adjust the excess fabric through the rings in a horizontal motion - going in the direction the fabric has come from. The fabric will move through the rings with much greater ease.

These tips aren't an exclusive or exhaustive list - if you have a system or method that works for you (obviously considering safety first), then great. ❤

Always remember:

Keep baby high & supported with the fabric snug across their back.

Make sure baby’s position is ‘J-shaped’ rather than ‘C-shaped’ (C-shaped means baby is slumped - their airway can become compromised).

Ensure baby’s airway is free & clear with their chin tipped up slightly and their face visible.

Woven Wrap Wednesday 🤓

Wovens For Beginners 🥰

Woven wraps are wonderful! If you're new to babywearing or have a young baby, they are the most wonderful carrying option.

This carry is the Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC); it's perfect for newborns & bigger babies.

Wovens come in many different colourways and weaves - choose one you love the look of.

This is Didymos Sole Occidente - I love it.

Sole is a Prima weave - they're soft enough for your newborn & grippy enough for even the biggest toddlers. The weave is light, airy yet grippy and strong.

Thank you so much to the beautiful wee Cú for demonstrating the beauty of a woven wrap!

Happy Wrapping!

Fourth Trimester Babywearing 🤓

Babywearing Basics - Hands Up

A question that comes up so often: 'where do baby's arms go?'

Ideally, baby's arms should be up in front of their body for support. It helps support their spine & lifts their head up.

From a sensory perspective it allows baby access to their hands; some baby's like to sleep on their hands or fists, and for some it's an early feeding cue - bringing a hand to their mouth.
