It’s a very long overdue “hello” from me 👋
It’s been 5 months since I last posted on this page 🙈 I’ve been splitting my time (and lots of my headspace) between Buckinghamshire and North Devon while my sister and I tried to support our Nan through both a terminal cancer and then a dementia diagnosis. A double whammy for her. I’m not sure why life can be so cruel at times. 2021 clearly didn’t get the memo about being kinder to her than 2020! 2022 it’s all on you now, sort it out!
My Nan is an incredibly strong and independent woman and understandably she struggled to accept she needed help. So she continued to try and live on her own, and, after what felt like forever for my sister and I battling to get some support for her - she had an inevitable fall at home. Her accounts of this fall vary from one day to the next, I guess that’s the beast that is dementia. We’ll never really know what happened. But then neither will she … which can only be a blessing ❤️
That was the eventual tipping point and everyone else saw how bad things had become. The right people noticed, and suddenly it was no longer just “two overly concerned granddaughters” that realised things needed to change. The proverbial had eventually hit the fan at lightning speed …
So fast forward a few weeks post fall, and she’s now in a lovely Care Home, not far from where she lived in North Devon. I am still going down once a month to spend the weekend with her but I can’t deny that the daily worry of trying to protect her had infiltrated quite a few areas of my life here 😬
We all still want to scoop her up and run away with her but we all know that she’s in the right place with eyes on her 24/7. No matter how much we wanted to that’s not something we could do 😢
So what’s the point in this slight over share?!
Well firstly I wanted to explain my radio silence … and secondly I’m on a bit of a mission now to openly talk about the reality behind dementia ❤️
I’ve finally sorted out the next product on my to-do list, Reed Diffusers. And when these go up onto the website I’ll be donating a large percentage of the sales to Dementia UK.
Thanks for reading this, and if anyone has any experience of dementia in their family please reach out. I’d love to learn more and support my Nan better.
