We are so excited to announce the shortlist for the first ever Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize, featuring six amazing books by new authors! They are all worthy titles and if you pop in we will happily tell you more about them! In the meantime, here’s your bite sized pitch:

Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow is an empowering, evocative celebration of black women, charting the story of one family through three generations.

Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde is a tribute to the ‘vagabonds’ who live in the margins, and a captivating blend of Nigerian folklore and the impact of capitalism, corruption, and oppression in Lagos.

How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu is a haunting imagining of a very possible near future caused by climate change, and the characters that fill its pages are a captivating testament to the resilience of humanity and the hope that can be found even in the darkest times.

Trespasses by Louise Kennedy is a blistering account of encroaching violence and fructured loyalties in 1970s Belfast, following a young schoolteacher torn between the aspects of her community.

The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty follows characters living in the same dilapidated apartment block as an unexpected death rocks their lives.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus is a witty, funny and powerful novel set in the ‘60s and centred around an unconventional female scientist doing her best to empower women who have been told, for too long, that they are not good enough.

Have you read any of these yet? If not, we highly recommend you pick one up: there’s something for everyone on this list!
