Here we have a little box containing a set of draughts and it’s a piece of “pyrography” - a term derived in the late Victorian period to describe objects like this one decorated with hot tools. Sometimes it’s called “pokerwork”.

The technique of decorating objects with hot tools can be traced back to ancient times and was used by Egyptian, Greek and Roman craftsmen. In the Victorian period it became a bit of a craze! A chap called Smart even invented a benzene driven pump pen which could deliver the heat required through a sharp point to make decoration easier and more elaborate. In the early 20th century the pens became even easier to use when they were electrified!!

The little box here dates from that period and is covered in delicate floral motifs! Charming!

I love discovering village hall antique fairs and we discovered, by accident, this little fair at Milford in Surrey last Sunday on the first stage of our journey back to Scotia!

Beamed ceiling, a stage with stalls on it, a lady making tea and bacon sandwiches and lots of stalls to browse and our Lola welcome too! The perfect nostalgia fix and the chance to pick up a bargain too!!

Here’s an unusual early 19th century Staffordshire flat back ceramic figure of WILL WATCH.

Watch was a well known privateer and smuggler! His notoriety increased after he appeared in a Charles Dickens short story and also appeared on stage in Victorian melodramas.

Not had this one before.

What better way to end our trip down to England than to wander along our favourite stretch of beach at Littlehampton - gloriously uncommercialised and on this occasion a gorgeous day to boot!

Out at the car boots at the weekend and managed to find this lovely item shown in the next slide - a Georgian framed silhouette of a gentleman dating to around 1800.

In an age when photography was something for the future these dainty items, carefully cut from black paper and often with detailed highlights, were the best way of preserving an image of a favourite family member or person. Now they make a delightful collectable.

Now here’s a bit of “bling” for the party season! It’s a boxed nice quality necklace by costume jeweller”ZARA”. With an articulated construction and set with multicoloured rhinestones it would definitely enhance that black party dress!
