The Story Behind Vibram Soles: From Mountain Tragedy to Outdoor Innovation 🥾⛰️
Before modern hiking boots, many mountaineers relied on leather boots fitted with heavy hobnails for grip on rock and ice. They were durable, but not always reliable — especially in changing mountain conditions.
In 1935, Italian mountaineer Vitale Bramani led an expedition in the Italian Alps that ended in tragedy when six climbers lost their lives, partly due to inadequate footwear and the challenges of changing weather conditions.
Determined to create a safer solution, Bramani began developing a new type of sole that could provide reliable grip across different terrain.
In 1937, he introduced the first Vibram lug sole — combining a durable rubber compound with a tread pattern inspired by tyre technology. The design was revolutionary, offering improved traction on rock, snow and mixed mountain surfaces.
The name Vibram comes from the founder himself: VItale BRamani.
Fast forward nearly 90 years and Vibram soles are still trusted by climbers, hikers, mountaineers and outdoor professionals around the world.
🔬 The technology has evolved, but the goal remains the same:
✔️ Reliable grip
✔️ Long-lasting durability
✔️ Confidence when the terrain gets challenging
From alpine peaks to Scottish mountain trails, the sole beneath your feet plays a huge role in every adventure.
