October is a great month to get the garden ready for the months ahead, with plenty of jobs to get stuck into while the soil is still warm.
Here are a few things to put on the list this month:
• Plant spring bulbs – if you haven't already chosen your favourites, now is a great time to get them planted for colour next spring.
• Refresh containers and baskets – replace tired summer planting with autumn bedding, cyclamen, heathers and other plants that will bring colour through the cooler months.
• Give the lawn some attention – repair bare or worn areas, reseed where needed and make the most of the still-warm soil.
• Plant trees, shrubs and perennials – autumn is a great time to get new plants established while the soil is warm and naturally moist.
• Prepare for colder weather – keep an eye on tender plants and bring those that need protection under cover before the first frosts arrive.
• Clear and tidy where needed – keep paths, patios and lawns clear of fallen leaves, while leaving some natural material in less-tidy areas to provide shelter for wildlife.
And amongst all the jobs, don't forget to enjoy the garden too. There is still plenty of colour, texture and interest to appreciate as autumn gets underway.
