Nifty Needles Craft Designs

Nifty Needles Craft Designs I am a tutor for group workshops, specialising in fibre arts. I am passionate about fostering creativity in a supportive and relaxed atmosphere.

I design needlework and sewing patterns/kits, I offer longarm quilting services and handmade crafting notions. I am a fibre artist and tutor who has been spinning, dyeing, sewing, knitting and crocheting for over 40 years. I was taught to sew when I was 10 years old by my mother who was a professional dressmaker. She also taught me to knit, crochet and do needle work. I grew up in a family of women

who filled their time with hand crafts for both work and pleasure. I was taught to spin when I was in my early teens by an elderly family friend in New Zealand, where I was born and grew up, who spun lace weight yarn directly from the fleece to crochet wedding gowns. In New Zealand I worked with adults with a learning disability (mainly autism and Downs Syndrome) to teach and support them to weave, spin, dye and knit articles which they sold in their local craft shop. I have also been an active member in several spinning guilds both in New Zealand and Northern Ireland

Here in Northern Ireland I have held workshops at Ulster Folk & Transport Museum for the local spinning guild. I have also tutored at local craft groups, community groups and Quilting shops (Northern Ireland & Ireland) in knitting, quilting, sewing, crocheting and various other traditional crafts. I have demonstrated spinning at various sheep shows, primary schools and museum open days both in New Zealand and Northern Ireland. I have extensive experience working with younger people, older people and adults with a learning disability so I can tailor workshops to different groups such as community groups, local craft groups or social groups which may include people of various ages and abilities. Many of the workshops that I conduct are reviving skills of a bygone era, so taking part in one of the workshops is to ensure that the skills of the past are not forgotten and we can enjoy them again and pass them onto the next generation. I have an online store where I sell my own patchwork & sewing designs in both written & PDF form, along with kits and sewing notions. My patterns are written for all levels of sewers and are supported with comprehensive instructions and diagrams so even the less experienced sewer can product a piece of art. My designs range from small to large items. I love to include applique (both blanket stitch and needle turn), Inktense colouring and embroidery/redwork in my designs. My quilts reflect this in their designs and many are available as BOM (block of the month) patterns or you can purchase the set of monthly patterns in one purchase. How I learnt… tiny stitches
My mother was a dressmaker and taught me to sew my own clothes from about the age of seven - but she was a very strict teacher!
Every hem had to be hand stitched. The stitches couldn't show on the right side, and they certainly couldn't be too large.
I still remember spending nearly a whole day hemming a full circle skirt. Mum inspected it… and promptly ripped the entire hem out because my stitches were too big! 😳
It was a tough way to learn, but two lessons have stayed with me.
The first was how to make those lovely tiny, almost invisible stitches that I now enjoy using when I hand stitch the binding onto a quilt.
The second was how I wanted to teach.
When someone comes to one of my workshops, I want them to learn, but I also want them to feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and having another go. Nobody is getting a day's worth of stitching ripped out on my watch! 😂
Who taught you to sew - and what lesson from them has stayed with you?

🇮🇪 An update for my customers in the Republic of Ireland...

A few weeks ago I made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend postal orders to the Republic of Ireland and the wider EU while I tried to understand how the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) would affect a tiny Northern Ireland business like Nifty Needles.

Well... I've certainly asked a lot of questions since then! 😂

The honest answer is that this is still very much a grey area. The new regulations are being introduced progressively, there are still areas being clarified and reviewed, and there simply isn't a straightforward answer yet for every situation faced by a small Northern Ireland business trading across the border.

After conversations with Invest Northern Ireland and InterTradeIreland, the practical guidance I have received is that, for now, it can be business as usual for my Republic of Ireland customers.

So I'm very pleased to say that I have switched Republic of Ireland postage back on through the Nifty Needles website. 🇮🇪❤️

For the time being, I'll be taking my Irish orders across the border and posting them through An Post in Omeath while I continue to follow developments and await further clarification.

Postal orders to the rest of the EU will remain suspended for now, although downloadable PDF patterns are, of course, still available internationally.

I'm glad I asked the questions rather than simply giving up on my Irish customers. There may not yet be a neat black-and-white answer, but at least I now have some guidance on how to move forward while everything continues to be worked through.

And most importantly...

Republic of Ireland postage is back! 🇮🇪📦❤️

🧶 Behind the scenes… designing a course
Confession time - sometimes I leave things until rather closer to the deadline than intended! 😂
I knew I had instructions for my upcoming Mitts on Two Circulars course. What I hadn't realised was that they were from my pre-Nifty Needles days… nearly 10 years ago! 😳
So began several days of rewriting, knitting and testing the pattern, first drafts, second drafts, proofreading, taking lots of new step-by-step photographs, changing things and proofreading all over again.
It’s a lot of work for a two-week course, but it means everyone leaves with clear instructions they can continue using long after the course finishes.

Well… look what the postie brought to Nifty Needles this morning! 😍🧵

A little while ago I received a rather unexpected email from Valdani Threads. They had discovered the Nifty Needles website and my embroidery designs and invited me to join their Designer/Certified Teacher programme.

Now, you know me… it doesn't take too much persuasion when beautiful threads are involved! 🤣

After chatting about the way I design - particularly my love of Redwork, pearl cotton and using different thread weights to create texture and dimension - they put together this wonderful selection of their hand-dyed and solid pearl cottons in sizes #5, #8 and #12 for me to experiment with.

And they arrived today.

Oh my goodness. They are gorgeous. 😍

Alyssa's eyes lit up the moment we opened the parcel and she's already itching to start stitching with them. My brain, meanwhile, is wandering towards A Cup for Every Season… and I think the Autumn cup may be the first to get the Valdani treatment. 🍂

But I'd really love to know what you think.

Would you like to see Valdani threads available to buy through Nifty Needles?

I'm thinking carefully chosen colours and perhaps little curated collections to complement Nifty Needles designs, rather than trying to stock every colour under the sun.

Let me know - because I have a feeling this parcel might be the beginning of something rather exciting. ❤️

🧵 Another beautiful customer quilt has made its way off the Nifty Needles longarm.
I always love this moment - seeing how the quilting adds that final layer of texture and brings all those lovely fabrics and piecing together.

Of course, finishing one means it’s time for the next quilt in the rather long queue waiting patiently for its turn! 😂
There are certainly plenty more quilting days ahead of me this autumn.
Are you working on a quilt at the moment?

☕ Monday morning & the week ahead…
September means the teaching diary is beginning to get rather busy again!

This week starts gently with the first evening of my 8-week Learn to Crochet course in Dungannon on Wednesday. 🧶
Then on Sunday I’m off to Aghalee for a completely different kind of creative day - making Junk Art Journals from scratch. We’ll turn recycled packaging into our journal covers, create and sew in our own signatures (pages), decorate everything… and then spend the rest of the day simply enjoying being creative. ✂️📖

And this is only the beginning - my autumn weekends are pretty much all about teaching from here! 😂
What’s on your creative to-do list this week?

📖 National Read a Book Day
There are few things I find more relaxing than getting lost in a good book - especially a lazy Sunday morning reading in bed with nowhere I need to be.

It’s one of my favourite ways to switch off and recharge my batteries.
And the perfect end to a relaxing Sunday? Settling down later with some peaceful needlework.

So perhaps it was inevitable that books and stitching would eventually meet at Nifty Needles… in the form of our new little book needle minder! 📖❤️
Are you a Sunday reader, stitcher… or a little bit of both?

🍂 Autumn inspiration
There is something rather lovely about watching the colours begin to change at this time of year.

The fresh greens of summer gradually give way to rusty oranges, warm golds, deep reds and earthy browns - and suddenly there is inspiration everywhere I look.
It’s one of my favourite things about designing: seeing colours in nature and imagining how they might work together in fabric and stitch.

My Autumn Harvest Cushions were inspired by just that - all those rich, cosy colours that make autumn feel like autumn. 🍁
What colours make you think of autumn?
