I’m very privileged to sometimes have some really special guitars come to the workshop. This is one of them, a gorgeous Lowden that’s around 20years old(i think) booked in for some new frets, nut and saddles.

Ebony fingerboards are the most difficult to work because they are so brittle and prone to chipping when the frets are being removed, especially glued frets like these.! However, they came out nicely and the ebony sanded back to the correct radius beautifully.

All the frets were levelled and crowned and the new frets were rolled to exactly match the shape and finish of the originals so it’s impossible to tell where the old frets end and the new ones start.

New nut and saddles cut from blanks and she’s as good as new… and probably sounding better than new.!

Interesting job this....

Martin CXE0000 with lifting bridge.

Because it’s made from a composite material there was no easy water-based glue fix for this one..

The type of glue needed does not clean off when it’s either wet or dry without damaging the surface so extremely precise gluing and clamping was need.

Looks the business now though.
