We are lucky to have Jonathan and David as part of our workshop team who are both Newark graduates and they wouldn’t be doing what they love without Newark. We had the lovely job of putting this beautiful Thomas Kennedy double bass back together from a box of parts. Essentially all the parts were in great condition but they needed reconstructing back together allowing for the 200 years of movement. It was fiddly and time consuming to make sure everything went back without tension. We were able to refit the original braces and bass bar which was a lovely touch. It looks beautiful and sounds amazing 🎻✨

We are proud to have sold this rare and important Italian double bass made by Gaetano Rossi in Milan, 1845. This particular model was developed in collaboration with the famous double bassist Giovanni Bottesini and his teacher Luigi Rossi, who was Gaetano Rossi’s brother. It is the first time we see a well-planned double bass that, while large, was designed with playability in mind. This design has had a major impact on new instruments and serves as inspiration for many modern double bass makers. Make sure to get the June edition of The Strad to read all about the Rossi family!

Happy new bass day to Ramon from Seattle! He took delivery of his stunning Martin Ruggeri Viol five string double bass yesterday. He makes it look small! Have lots of fun rattling some concert halls with that low B 💨

Scroll graft time. This is one of the most common things we do in our workshop. Here we have three beautiful heads. One by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, another by Thomas Kennedy and a rare double bass by Charles Boullangier. Having the neck set properly with all the angles correct makes the biggest difference to even tension across the strings and easy playability. We also have a stock of the finest wood we use on these special instruments we are so lucky to see in our workshop.
