What would you make?

(I’d rip it down the middle, then crosscut at 2/3 length and go for a nice pair of dovetailed art and crafts bookends with arched tops.)

This is the piece of timber for Workshop Challenge #2.

It’s got a few interesting possibilities. It could be cut down and turned into something completely different, or perhaps split through the middle and made into a book-matched pair.

Useful, decorative, unexpected… I’m genuinely interested to see what you come up with.

There are no bad ideas — words, sketches or marked-up photos are all welcome.

The winner gets their idea made for them, using this piece of timber.

Entries are now open via the Mungo & Co. website.

Closing date: 18 October 2026 at 11:59pm.

And, being a Yorkshireman, I’m afraid the finished piece can only be sent to a UK address. 😉

Our new mobile shaping station 👌

We’ve been looking for a good pattern makers vice for the workshop, but wanted something more versatile to use around the furniture school.

So we’ve mounted the HNT Gordon Pattern Makers Vice onto a triple thick ply board that can be clamped to any bench around the workshop, making it a really useful mobile shaping station.

We’re seriously impressed so far. Beautifully made and brilliant versatility - especially being able to hold components securely at different angles for spokeshaving jobs. The tilting jaw is also very useful for holding tapered pieces securely 💪🏻

We’ll be putting it through its paces and featuring it more as it gets some real world use.

Apparently you can now add photos in the comments on insta, so I thought let’s try it out. Show us a candid shot of whatever happens to be on your bench right now, any project any stage.

Nice tools and pride in your work make even mundane tasks enjoyable. It may only be a bit of mdf for boxing in a pipe in a bathroom, but let’s make a good job of it.
