When Bangor mum Paula Cardiff decided to take her sons to the beach to let off some steam, little did she realise it would inspire a hobby that would eventually become a business.

The 43-year-old and her three boys fell in love with beachcombing — collecting shells, sea glass, ceramics, antique bottle tops and other treasures.

It was on a beach picnic during school holidays that they first began collecting sea glass, but soon it became a mindful activity that the whole family looked forward to.

My eldest took some photos of me at the weekend while we were beachcombing. With quite a few new Facebook followers and quite a few mean comments this week on my older posts that seem to be going viral , I thought I would share who is behind the videos. Perhaps it may make someone think before saying something mean....I'm just a 40-something girl, wandering the beach, and holding her prize finds with the same pride as a competitive fisherman 🤣🩵🌊

The tide has been against me all week. I have driven to work daily, seeing parts of the beach exposed that I have not seen before. I couldn't believe it when we discovered some pockets of natural clay! Then a clay marble, our first of the season. the highlight was this massive bottle from Young and Sons, Belfast. While it is broken and has cracks, I'll be cleaning this up and adding it to my collection. such a large bottle and I have a lot of their vulcanite stoppers. A great Saturday morning! 🩵🌊

If you are like me and you love a wee drive to a beach, Portavogie is one to add to the list. The boys and I went down recently and I wanted the share a bit of what the beach is like and what to be prepared for when you get there:

- the drive down is beautiful with lots of places to stop on the way
- we parked at the harbor, if you do the same, be prepared for a climb down to the beach over lots of rocks. Not an easy one if you have mobility issues but I think there is easier access further round from the centre of the town
- there are a few shipwrecks on the beach, which the boys loved exploring
-there is also what looks like a vehicle beside these shipwrecks, complete with rusty wheels and engine (wear shoes)
-there are more scallop shells than you can count
- the beach was very busy while we were there
-be sure to sample some of the local food
-you might be lucky to spot some of the resident seals in the harbor!
