Well, today we had a visit from Durham County Council, and I’m absolutely devastated. We’ve put so much time, effort and money into renovating and bringing the new Sanders Cove Crystals to life, and we’ve now been told we need to have discussions with the Conservation and Design Team about getting an approved colour for the front of our shop.

It’s particularly upsetting as we’ve only just had our new signage installed, designed around the purple shopfront — purple is our brand colour after all! 💜

Barnard Castle has such a lovely variety of colourful shopfronts — pinks, teals, yellows and more — and before we arrived, ours was green. Since changing it to purple, every comment we’ve received has been about how lovely it looks and how much brighter the shop is.

Unfortunately, it seems a report has been made to the council about our shopfront, which has brought this about.

We’re just a husband-and-wife team trying to build a small family business and support our family. Taking the leap into a much larger premises was a huge — but very exciting — step for us, and we’ve poured so much into making the new shop something we can be proud of.

We really just want to be left to trade, grow our little business and hopefully bring something positive to Barnard Castle. As a small business, things are already hard enough without unexpected hurdles like this. 😢

Hopefully we can work with the council and find a way forward that allows Sanders Cove to still look and feel like Sanders Cove. 💜
