Its time to unveil September's choice for The Bookseller's Choice Subscription, before October's head out later this week! π
Now, we've had some quite dark and heavy books for July and August, so for September, I thought I'd go with a lighter pick - one that sits perfectly for the dog days of summer, a book that feels like sitting on a porch in the late summer sun, soaking up the last rays before it sets, and makes way for autumn...
Its no surprise to anyone at this point, that I adore both American fiction and long family sagas, and Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding is both of those! But instead of it being a long, sweeping epic, it gives more of a William Faulkner vibe, its a fleeting narrative that whisks you away and flows as quickly as the river itself.
It has such a distinct style, one that you can't think too hard about. As I described in our letter, it feels like sitting in a restaurant and overhearing snippets of information from the family on the next table, until you somehow know everyone's name and business, despite never having been introduced properly. In short, you have to "just go with it".
Told from the perspective of Laura McRaven, you're invited to spend a drama filled week in the lead up to her cousin Dabney's wedding. As with all our books so far, its a small snipped of what actually happens in the book - its filled with characters and events that somehow seem minor, but all matter deeply in the end.
It's one of my favourite in the american south genre, and I hope you've all enjoyed it as much as I did!
Now, on to October's book...No spoilers, of course, but I've chosen something spooky but cosy, something thats perfect for autumn but won't leave you needing to keep the lights on at night (I'm leaving the darker horror to the new Horror Edition Subscription π
