Small business shipping to Northern Ireland stopped suddenly and most shops never explained why.

It is not because they forgot about you. It is not because they do not care. It is because the paperwork, costs, and legal risk involved have become genuinely unmanageable for small independent makers.

Here is the short version of what is actually going on.

Northern Ireland sits in a unique legal position. Even though it is part of the UK, it still follows many EU regulations for physical goods. That means anything shipped there needs to meet a completely different set of rules compared to sending the same product to England, Scotland, or Wales.

We are talking about UFI codes, different CLP labels, Poison Centre Notification submissions, and now under GPSR 2024, a requirement to have an EU based responsible operator appointed before you can legally sell there at all.

For a big company, that is admin. For a small independent, that is thousands of pounds and a serious legal risk.

The penalty for getting it wrong is not a warning letter. It is fines that could close a business entirely.

I did not stop shipping to Northern Ireland because I wanted to. I stopped because the alternative was risking everything I have spent years building, and I am not prepared to do that.

This affects wax melts, candles, handmade goods, second hand items on eBay, Etsy sellers, all kinds of small shops. It is not just me. Search GPSR on Google and you will find thousands of small businesses in the same position.

I am keeping a close eye on any changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol. If that changes, I will be back to shipping there immediately and you will hear about it first.

You thought your wax melt stopped working. It didn't. Your nose just gave up on you.

Here's something nobody really explains when you get into wax melts.

You pop something in the warmer, the room smells incredible, and then maybe a short while later you think... has it gone? Is it done? Did I waste my money?

You haven't. It's still going. Your nose just stopped noticing.

It's called nose blindness, and it happens to everyone. Your brain is actually very efficient at filtering out smells that are constantly present. It decides the scent is no longer new information, so it stops registering it. The fragrance is still there filling the room. You've just gone nose blind to it.

The frustrating part is your guests don't have the same problem. They walk through your front door, hit that wall of white gardenia and jasmine, and immediately feel it. That soft, creamy floral opening, the warmth underneath from musk and sandalwood, the way the whole room just smells considered and calm. They notice all of it. You've just become so used to it that it's invisible to you.

This is actually why scent throw matters so much. A fragrance with real presence, the kind that builds properly and lingers at a level your nose can keep returning to, gives you something to catch at different moments rather than one single hit that your brain immediately files away and ignores.

Wax melts that fill a room before you even open the box. Beverly ordered her latest round of Daya's Essence and by the time Watermelon and Lemonade had been melting a while, it had filled her two bed flat, drifted into the communal hallway, and met her halfway up the first flight of stairs.

Her neighbours were asking questions.

That is not an accident. That is 30% fragrance oil in every single pot. I spent a long time researching and testing to get there because I was not interested in making something average. I wanted something that actually worked.

Wax melt CLP labels and what those warning symbols actually mean

You pick up a wax melt, flip it over, and suddenly you're reading something that looks like a chemistry exam. Linalool. D-limonene. Warning symbols. Allergen declarations.

And your brain goes: should I be worried about this?

Here's the thing. Those ingredients listed on 99% of wax melt labels are not there because makers are hiding something dodgy. They are there because UK law requires full transparency above certain thresholds, and because those compounds are genuinely common components found in most fragrances.

Linalool is in lavender. D-limonene is in citrus. You will find them on my labels, and you will find them on almost every other reputable maker's labels too. That is not a red flag. That is a CLP label doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

The labels are standardised because the ingredients are standardised. Most fragrance oils used across the industry share similar building blocks. So when you see the same warnings on multiple brands, it is not a coincidence. It is just the reality of how fragrance works.

What actually matters is concentration, ventilation, and knowing your household. If you have pets with sensitive respiratory systems, birds, fish, or reptiles, it is worth reading a little more carefully. But for most homes, used with a bit of common sense, wax melts are completely fine.

I never claim my melts are anything they are not. My CLP labels are accurate, my ingredients are fully compliant, and if you ever want to know what is in a specific scent, you can just ask me.

That transparency is not marketing. It is just how I run things.

Mine were already at 20%.

People had a lot to say.

"That's too strong."

"Nobody wants that."

"More than 10% is illegal."

(It isn't.)

"Your melts are a fire hazard."

(They're not.)

"You'll never sell them."

That one didn't age very well.

The funny thing?

Almost none of those opinions came from the people I actually created my wax melts for.

They came from people who like a softer, more subtle scent.

And that's completely fine.

But my customers wanted something different.

A real customer review makes trying a new wax brand feel a lot less risky.

Strong wax melts are rare. Like, genuinely strong ones that fill a room and are still going the next day kind of rare.

Beverly left this review back in March, and I still think about it because she said something that really stuck with me.

She said she could still smell the scent the next morning.

Not while the burner was on.

After.

The next day.

That's what happens when you stop chasing a low price point and start caring about what actually goes into the pot.

10% can last. 30% is built to throw harder. That difference matters.

Fragrance load is the percentage of scent oil actually in your wax.

Most snap bars sit at around 10%. Daya's Essence melts are at 30%.

That gap matters more than people realise. At 10%, you get a nice initial hit.

Top notes come in confident, smell great, and then quietly disappear. What lingers after that is thin.
The base notes, the warm, cosy, long lasting part of any fragrance, barely get a look in at that load. At 30%, the whole fragrance actually plays out.

Top notes, heart notes, base notes. Each stage gets proper time to do its thing.

That is why customers report getting up to 30 hours from a single 28g melt, though results vary depending on your warmer, room size, and airflow.

The maths on snap bars looks generous until you work out how many cubes you burn through to get the same hours.

Often it costs more per 30 hours than people expect, not less. I wrote a full breakdown on the blog comparing both side by side, fragrance pyramid and all.
