French Kingwood & Ormolu Writing Table c.1900

A particularly elegant antique French kingwood writing table, dating from the late 19th century and beautifully executed in the Louis XVI Revival taste.

The craftsmanship becomes apparent the closer you look.

Richly figured kingwood is arranged into intricate parquetry across the top and frieze, complemented by extensive gilt-bronze decoration. At the centre is a wonderful ormolu plaque depicting playful classical putti, with further floral mounts, beaded borders and gilt-bronze detailing continuing down the slender fluted legs.

Perhaps one of its best features is its size. At just 89 cm wide, it has all the decorative presence of a fine French writing desk without requiring a large room.

The full-width frieze also opens to reveal a generous drawer, making this an exceptionally versatile piece for use as a writing table, dressing table or decorative console.

Inspired by classical Roman designs, each urn features a beautifully fluted body, gadrooned lower section and broad flared rim, all enhanced by a naturally weathered red-painted patina developed over generations outdoors. The pale stone pedestals provide a striking contrast, giving the pair an imposing yet refined presence.

Complete pairs of antique garden urns are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making examples such as these highly desirable for collectors, landscape designers and owners of period homes.

Whether positioned to frame a driveway, doorway, garden path or courtyard, they offer timeless beauty that simply cannot be replicated by modern reproductions.
