We Buy and Sell Antique furniture. Hawkins Antiques Ltd is a family run business which has been established for over 50 years in the antique trade. It was established in the 1960's by the late Jack Hawkins originally from Warwick in Warwickshire then moving to Barry South Wales in the early seventies. Hawkins Antiques is now in its 3rd generation, it is a well known business and is known through out the world in the antique trade. Hawkins Antiques has shipped over 150 containers a year to America, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Canada and in the more recent years to Japan, Korea, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, China and servicing the home trade.

Antique French Amboyna Ebonised Porcelain Plaque Bonheur du Jour c.1870

A superb French bonheur du jour dating from circa 1870, conceived in the richly decorative Napoleon III taste.

The piece combines beautifully figured amboyna veneers with contrasting ebonised sections, numerous painted porcelain plaques, gilt-metal mounts and extensive mirrored detailing.

The upper section is centred by a tall arched mirror and flanked by two enclosed cupboards, each decorated with an oval portrait plaque and surrounded by further porcelain ornament.

The writing section opens to reveal fitted storage, while the shaped lower shelves, mirrored backing and pierced gilt-metal galleries give the piece exceptional architectural presence.

Furniture of this type was designed to display both craftsmanship and luxury, and this example certainly does that.

Antique Edwardian Mahogany Inlaid Compactum Wardrobe c.1900

A magnificent large-scale Edwardian compactum wardrobe, dating to circa 1900, with beautifully worked marquetry throughout.

The four-door façade is decorated with classical urns, floral motifs and scrolling inlay, extending across the frieze, lower cupboard doors and central drawer fronts.

Beyond the decorative exterior, the interior offers excellent practical storage with hanging compartments to either side, central shelving and a useful arrangement of drawers.

Large wardrobes of this quality and scale are becoming increasingly difficult to source, particularly examples retaining such an extensive and coordinated scheme of inlay.

Antique French Louis XV Style Vernis Martin Gilt Bronze Centre Table c.1900

A striking late 19th-century French centre table combining painted decoration, shaped cabinetmaking and fine gilt-bronze detail.

The serpentine top is centred by a large hand-painted fête galante scene depicting elegantly dressed figures within a wooded landscape. Fine line inlay and contrasting crossbanding frame the composition, while a removable shaped glass protector sits above the top to help preserve the decoration.

Below, the shaped frieze incorporates a useful central drawer, with further gilt-bronze mounts extending down the cabriole legs and terminating in decorative sabots.

This is the type of piece that works equally well in a traditional room or as a highly decorative statement piece within a more contemporary interior.

🇫🇷 A Fine French Vernis Martin Commode, c.1880–1890

An exceptional piece of late 19th-century French furniture, combining beautifully figured kingwood, extensive gilt-bronze mounts and a shaped breccia marble top.

The highlight is undoubtedly the large Vernis Martin style fête galante scene, extending across both drawers to create an almost uninterrupted painted composition across the front.

The elegant bombé form, serpentine lines and cabriole legs are characteristic of the Louis XV Revival, making this a superb statement piece for either a traditional interior or as a contrast within a contemporary setting.

A Fine Pair of Burr Walnut Side Cabinets c.1870

An exceptionally decorative true pair of Victorian side cabinets, combining richly figured burr walnut with painted porcelain plaques, fine inlay and gilt-metal detailing.

The doors have been particularly well composed, using the dramatic natural figuring of the burr walnut to create a strong symmetrical pattern. At the centre of each is an oval porcelain plaque painted with classical figures and surrounded by a striking blue border.

Each cabinet opens to reveal a shelved interior lined in deep red fabric, making them practical as well as highly decorative.

Finding a genuine matching pair of nineteenth-century cabinets is considerably more difficult than sourcing a single example, and these would look superb positioned either side of a fireplace, doorway, console or large mirror.

The extraordinary raised back immediately sets it apart. A distinctive shaped central mirror is surrounded by panelled oak decorated with stylised organic motifs, while turned columns and slender spindle galleries create an unusually architectural silhouette.
