Designed by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois in 1971.
Hopfer had spent the previous decade building a new vocabulary for seating. The Mah Jong was its fullest expression. No legs, no fixed frame - just three basic elements that the user stacks, combines and reconfigures at will. A lounge chair, a large sofa, a bed. He called it a seating landscape, and nothing like it had existed before.
Fifty-five years later, every Mah Jong is still hand-sewn in a dedicated workshop. It has been dressed by Missoni, Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Sonia Rykiel. Each collaboration a reinterpretation, never a revision.
Still in continuous production. Still the most recognised piece in the Roche Bobois collection.
