Yeah, it’s been a while, but you’re looking good.

So we were wondering; do you have a creator that you’ll follow on any project, regardless of project? A writer or artist that cuts through the Marvel/DC divide that can draw Spidey one year and Superman the next?

One of our favourites would be Fearless Frank Cho, whose slapstick and cheesecake lured us all the way from Liberty Meadows, Zombie King and Shanna The She-Devil onto Mighty Avenger, Savage Wolverine, Skybourne, New Avengers vs Ultimates and 50 Girls 50 & Fight Girls and maybe even eventually the conclusion of Liberty Meadows!

Another would be Erstwhile Eric Powell, the Tom Waitsian artist and writer of one of our all time favourite comics ‘The Goon’ but also time on Action Comics, Namwolf, Big Man Plans and the exceptional graphic novel ‘Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?’

What about YOU? Are you a character driven reader that wants everything featuring Harley Quinn or Gwenpool or do you have a full library of every last Alan Moore book from Maxwell The Magic Cat to Illuminations? Let us know in the comments!

STILL ON THE SHELVES, SOMEHOW DEPT:

AS we await this week’s delivery, we find ourselves astounded that there are copies of Ashley Wood’s excellent LORE Remastered series still available at our fine emporium.

For the unfamiliar, Lore is an updating of his original series as written by T.P. Louise and originally published by IDW Comics with new art pages and full relettering as published by Image Comics.

While Lore skews towards the supernatural perfectly as we creep towards Halloween, you may be better acquainted with Wood via his work on ‘s , covers on Girl with (of or, you know fame.) or especially unlikely, his long out of print bit of genius Popbot.

1 & 2 still in stock as of this writing.

‘Take the money and run.’

With Gotham City Sirens’ being delayed until October, we thought it prudent to draw your attention to ‘Laura and Other Stories’ by .

Cutting his teeth on high profile titles such as GCS, The Joker and Batman along with scores of variants and his own Image title, Karmen, March has done the clever thing of parlaying that attention into his own title ‘Laura And Other Stories’.

Obviously Guillem serves up hot cheesecake and there are elements of that in ‘Laura’ but this seems to be where his heart is. Whereas Joker was flash, swirl and dynamic, Laura is low key, conversational, introspective and wholly concerned with the relationships between people. Okay, by people we mean Va-Va Voom ladies but if we were to sum it up in a pithy phrase, it would be ‘Milo Manara’s take on The Nao Of Brown’.

Published by Ablaze, we’ll have copies back in stock on Monday.

If pushed, we would have to say our favourite comics were his early issues of Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen. With a chip on his shoulder and something to prove after his less than amicable exit from Marvel, those issues were setting up SOMETHING exciting even if it wasn’t entirely clear what that was.

Little did we expect we were seeing the beginning of what would become The Fourth World Saga and in what had been largely a throwaway title, The King made it clear that anything was possible. With a few sly digs at his previous employer along the way.

The legend is that Jack picked Olsen to take over because it didn’t have a regular team assigned to it at the time and he didn’t want to cost anyone a gig for the sake of his ideas. Which speaks far more about the man than any of his numerous creations do.

On behalf of everyone employed by the comics industry, thank you, and Happy Birthday to the memory of Jack ‘King’ Kirby.

What’s your favourite Kirby Kreation? Is there a particular run of his work that resonates with you? Are you like us and own several copies of each issue of The Secret City Saga for reasons you couldn’t articulate to another adult? Let us know in the comments!

MATES OF THE SHOP DEPT PART 2.

is a lush and varied emporium located in Huntingdon, NYC and as you can see from the stuff they choose to present, is concerned with displaying the vast array of material that makes up comic history.

We draw your attention to them as they are having a 25% sale off EVERYTHING* ALL THE THINGS* That thing you went ‘oooh’ at in the pictures? THAT AS WELL.

Be aware that obviously if you’re in the UK, international shipping fees will be incurred but given the amount of out of print stuff Escape Pod has, it’s probably worth doing in one go.

*does NOT include standing order items or consignment items. Let the man pay his bills, you heathens!

WHILE we twiddle our thumbs awaiting the delayed delivery of new funnybooks due to the Bank Holiday, here’s a new feature we like to call MATES OF THE SHOP, which is a look at retailers of a similar mindset and jib cut as ourselves.

1st up is the excellent over in Liverpool, who constantly find rare and excellent things of a literary nature that constantly pulverise our poor wallets. It’s always worth having them on notifications as they are the actual manifestation of the shop in Stephen King’s ‘Needful Things’.

Pictured are some of their recent acquisitions, which are still for sale at time of this posting.

Rare AF Dept.

From the period of portfolios, released a Faust oriented collection of prints. It’s definitely adult only material and a bit dinged by the shots and anger of time, hence the super reasonable price of £14.95. One in stock!

BIGGER than JLA/Avengers! WIDER than Marvel/DC! CHEAPER than a copy of Superman/Spider-Man!

One of the great overlooked crossover titles was 1996’s celebration of Gen 13 reaching the dizzy heights of , er, 13. To properly commemorate this astonishing accomplishment, The Gang go searching for The Wizard and encounter the likes of Hellboy, Lady Death, Bone, Archie and even a certain Canadian, bub.

This edition reprints Gen 13 issues A,B,C and the various variant covers along with sketches and notes. £5 the copy

We’re so excited about the filthy lucre we found in The Crypt Of Cartoons yesterday we’re going to start talking about them before we open our doors!

This is a reprint of Jack Davis strips from the EC classic ‘Tales From The Crypt’ from 2012. It’s rather beautiful and we have ONE (1) copy in stock. Give us a shout if you’re interested

We have to confess that we thought we were rather done with superhero stories but the recent trend towards work like X-Men: Grand Design and Spider-Man Life Story is an interesting trick, mooshing and streamlining decades of almost unrelated story arcs into one coherent narrative.

Hulk: Grand Design by appears to be the unnoticed member of the gang, which is unfair as it’s just as interesting and vibrant. We have ONE set of the two issues in stock. Avalible now for nine quid!

We’re taking a break from our continued rummage from the shelves (although we remain open for your Funnybook pleasures) to take a look at a lost comic movie classic.

Before Deadpool started breaking the Fourth Wall, Trace and San were on their 4th pint in the film based on the Viz strip, The F@t Sl@gs. A meta guest star cavalcade as the girls become famous as revolutionary in its take on body shapes as the equally excellent ‘Josie & The Pussycats.’

Obviously absolutely chock full of rudeness, given the source material and an ability to translate the Geordie dialect might come in useful but this ought to be regarded as great and accurate an adaptation of the source material as anything Marvel or DC have thrown out this century.
