After far too long, I finally ticked Jane Austen's House off my Austen Bucket List and it did not disappoint! I did not expect all the little details that made the cottage feel like Jane was at home, with glimpses of her everyday life.

Here are a few of my favourite things among many favourite things from my visit...

🪶Creaky stairs - It may sound random but I loved literally walking in Jane's footsteps and hearing the stairs squeak beneath mine. It made the cottage feel like a home and imagine Jane's own footsteps walking down to her writing desk.

🪶Jane's Writing table - No explanation needed! It was a moment to stand beside her little table where she wrote her novels. I wondered whether she could ever have imagined how much her words would mean to so many of us.

🪶Bedroom view - Looking out of Jane's window at the washing gently fluttering on the line was such a simple detail that again, humanised (Austenised??) the entire experience. I found myself imagining Jane looking out her window on an ordinary laundry day too.

🪶The Wallpaper - Even the wallpaper brings you closer to Jane! Reproduced from original fragments found in the house, it's such a lovely detail to be among the beautiful prints that acted as a backdrop to her everyday life.

🪶The lovely Stewards! - They were very welcoming and I had some lovely chats with them. They also did not make me feel silly for taking random pics with the Meryton Chronicle for the necessary Instagram socials 😂 I even got given some helpful gardening tips!

Jane's writing table was always going to get me but I hadn't expected to fall for creaky stairs and washing on the line! What struck me the most was how wonderful it was to experience Jane's cottage as her home and not just as an exhibit.

Have you visited Chawton Cottage and what stayed with you?

“Charlotte? Engaged to Mr Collins? Impossible!”

This news renders Lizzy speechless whilst Mrs Bennet is anything but...and Meryton has a new engagement to discuss just not the one they were expecting!

Lizzy's shock is understandable yet so is her friend’s sensible choice. I love the scene in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice adaptation where Charlotte stands by her decision:

"I'm twenty-seven years old, I've no money and no prospects. I'm already a burden to my parents and I'm frightened. So don't you judge me, Lizzy. Don't you dare judge me!”

In a time of very little opportunity available to women with the harsh reality of poverty a looming constant, you feel the genuine fear beneath her decision. In 2005’s modern take, there’s something deeply moving about watching Charlotte defend her choice to the one friend whose understanding she might have hoped for most.

At 27, Charlotte understands in a way the pretty, spirited and younger Lizzy does not, that she has not the luxury of waiting for love. For her and most women, marriage was a practical necessity for survival and stability.

So Charlotte chose.

A comfortable home, security, a future she can depend upon. Safety.

The engagement astonishes the neighbourhood but also acts as a reminder that behind the gossip, is a woman making the best choice she feels she can.

Step into the world of Pride & Prejudice and read all about the match that set tongues wagging in our December 1811 newspaper 📰
