If you’re someone who thinks about who lived in your house or home before you, or even what your legacy might be in that place, the ‘Impermanence’ Volume XVI of Ark Journal is for you. I mean, all the issue are great, but this one is deep. It argues that every home begins before its present inhabitants arrive, and will continue after they leave. ‘Previous lives remain in its rooms and materials bear the evidence of time, giving architecture a permanence that is never entirely fixed’, it says. Balancing what we inherit with what we change, the journal sees the home as part of a much longer continuum in which ‘we are temporary custodians rather than final authors. Its pages invite closer attention to what a building has already lived through, what we contribute during our time within it and what might remain after we have gone.’ Published today in three covers. Happier, Stupider Times is a ‘sunwashed trip’ to the place and time of renegade chef Anthony Bourdain’s formative years. It roughly coincides with the release of Matt Johson’s movie Tony which follows Bourdain’s arrival in 1970s Provincetown with big ideas about becoming a writer and zero experience working in kitchens, with the rest being history. A beautiful book, especially if you remember food in the 70s, fondly or otherwise. Published with maps, recipes, unseen photographs, ephemera etc. by A24 Books at £35

Not many new magazines in this week, so here’s another one of our fascinating books. I’m almost hearing about Swiss banks and Swiss bank accounts, usually in relation to someone being very wealthy or hiding their wealth in one or something to do with gold, and lots of it. I’ve never mentally unpacked what they actually are and how they became so controlling because, of course, I’ve never been in danger of opening a Swiss bank account. Mountains of Gold: Uncovering the Architecture of Swiss Banking is a new book which – if I read it – would transform my vague, abstract ideas about Swiss finance into an actual landscape with identified pathways and places (think railway lines, underground tunnels and bunkers) used by Swiss banks to trade, transport and hoard gold. Put simply, it converts Alpine loveliness into geographical capital, told as a history but with the feel of an international detective story. The official blurb (slightly tampered with by me) is ‘From a mountain vault inside the Gotthard to the grand hotels of the Bernese Oberland, from the mines of South Africa to a fondue restaurant in London, Ludo Groen (Assistant Professor in the Complex Projects group at the Department of Architecture at TU Delft) unravels the concerted efforts of bankers, military officers, politicians and architects to fortify Switzerland as a financial centre. The lucrative market they built is studded with material infrastructures which, throughout the book, serve as evidence of a history whose records have remained inaccessible and contentious until now.’ Published by gta Verlag ETH Zürich at a stiff £47 but worth its weight in gold.
