On the Kent coast at Margate, in a studio full of sea light, the ceramicist Sarah Daly works clay on a wheel. You may have seen her on Channel 4’s The Great Pottery Throw Down in 2023. Sumor is hers, a limited edition incense holder thrown and hand-painted by her, one piece at a time.

Each is finished with oxides and underglazes before firing, and some of the glazes carry wood ash gathered from the woodland near her studio. No two come out the same. Each takes its colour and its character from the coastal light she works in.

It is a tactile, characterful thing to live with, a companion for the daily ritual of lighting a stick, and a gift for anyone who values what the hand makes and the time it takes.

The Sumor limited edition incense holder is the work of Sarah Daly, a ceramicist working from her studio on the Kent coast at Margate, whose work featured on Channel 4’s The Great Pottery Throw Down in 2023. Each piece is wheel-thrown and hand-painted with oxides and underglazes before firing, some glazes carrying wood ash gathered from nearby woodland so no two are quite alike. Tactile, quietly characterful, and shaped by the coastal light she lives among.

A summer’s day has more of itself to give than any other. Light before six, warmth that holds past supper, and a long stretch in between that seems to belong entirely to you.
Scent is one of the quiet ways to mark its passing. A note for waking, a note for the bright middle hours, a note for letting go.
Morning — Frankincense. Clear and resinous, the one to light while the kettle goes on. It leaves a room feeling cleansed and ready.
Noon — Neroli. Orange blossom at the height of the day. Bright, green and sunlit, with the body to carry through open windows.
Night — Sandalwood. When the light finally goes, something to settle into. Warm, grounding, unhurried.
