Goats can’t really be furloughed. And neither can cows or sheep. The reality of farming is that animal feed still needs to be bought, crops still need to be sown, land needs to be tended to. By buying british cheese you are supporting rural family businesses that are fundamental to our food network. To find out more, Jenny Linford (who wrote the book on British Cheese) has written the most wonderful article about the precious and precarious situation of british cheese making.

Following the announcement from the PM this evening, we have taken the very difficult decision to close our shop in Jermyn Street. Our online shop will continue and we hope we will back in our shops soon. Thank you to our incredible team who have been so supportive of each other and such champions of the artisan producers who make this an industry we will come back fighting to protect.

We’re working hard in all our locations to diversify and keep going. We have food and we don’t want it to go to waste. Our shops are open but some of their opening times will be changing. Our offer on the website is being updated regularly and mongers in each shop are concentrating on how we mix things up locally too - from deliveroo to amazon fresh to working with local couriers to personally delivering cheeses out to customers wherever we can. Artisan cheese is delicious and supports small businesses. Thank you to our fantastically resilient team, the amazing farmers and cheesemakers out there and to our wonderful loyal customers.

Our ever so popular three piece knife set has had a make over! Not all knives are made equal. Paxton & Whitfield’s Set of Thee Cheese Knives are constructed with triple riveted handles and a 314 stainless steel, full tang blades. Full tang means the blade is made from one piece of metal that runs from the tip of the blade to the end of the handle. These full tang blades, along with their bolsters, add weight, strength and durability to the knives, giving them a superior construction, improved leverage and better balance. The set contains a hard and soft cheese knife and a hatchet for use on very hard, aged cheeses.

Parmigiano Reggiano. September 2nd marks the anniversary of the Great Fire of London of 1666. The Great Fire began in a bakery on Pudding Lane and raged for 4 days, destroying over 13,000 houses, 87 Parish Churches and famously ruined much of St Paul’s Cathedral. Samuel Pepys, a famous contemporary British diarist, kept great records of this period. With fire consuming London at an alarming rate, many people were scrabbling around to try and protect their most valuable possessions. Pepys wrote about digging a hole outside his home to bury and therefore protect, his gold, papers, wine... and his most rare and expensive import of a large Parmesan cheese.
