What a beauty! Edmund Spenser’s first major poetic work. The archaic spelling of the title was a deliberate nod to medieval literature. Interestingly, Spenser’s pastoral poem features the first recorded use of the word ‘sarcasm’ in English.

The Beaufort Bookshop, through bookshop.org, are incredibly proud to be working with Penguin on a special campaign this Christmas. Whether it’s a boost of confidence, the perfect recipe or a bedtime story - it begins with a book. But not everyone has equal access to reading.

Every time you purchase one of 32 hand-selected titles from Bookshop.org this Christmas - including Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo and A Promised Land by Barack Obama - Penguin will donate one where it’s needed most. It's an opportunity to support disadvantaged communities AND independent bookshops.

Penguin are working closely with Neighbourly to get books into the hands of grassroots good causes across the country, including food banks, homeless shelters, and community centres. The campaign will run from now until Monday 21 December 2020.

Wild Swimming for Wild Women: a selection of our favourite books on the magic of diving with alacrity into the chilly deep. Find them at https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/wild-swimming-for-wild-women.

Our choices include "At the Pond", a classic selection of essays from renowned authors such as Esther Freud and Margaret Drabble, each sharing their personal experiences of the benefits and joys swimming has given them. Another favourite is Tristan Gooley's "How to Read Water", which informs and expands the simple ways we think about water - be it streams, oceans or puddles.

Happy Easter holidays! I hope you’re all enjoying the sunshine.

I don’t know when this picture was taken but I’m liking the horticulture above the shop sign and the 12 panel window. Is it me or does everyone appear to be social distancing?

I’ve now planned my online English classes for students from 6 - 18 years old and these will begin next week and run until the end of lockdown. Teaching will take place via Zoom, which happens to be the perfect platform for teaching English. My principal focus is to provide and maintain challenge and engagement with this key subject, enabling students to return to school and/or transition to a new key stage with minimum anxiety. An added bonus is that, when they return, they can impress their teachers with newly learnt skills and knowledge too!

For many this is a difficult time financially, so I am reducing my normal rate.

If you’d like more information, and a timetable of classes, please email me at [email protected]

I’m a PhD qualified former Head of English with 25 years of teaching experience.
