Mr Parlanchin's (delayed) Book of the Month!

This month (August), the shop's resident voice thrower-in-chief, Mr Parlanchin recommends books on the ancient art of Ventriloquism. The reason for this month's delay, is due to the fact that Mr Parlanchin, had to take his PhD viva voce examination, in front of a panel of academic experts at the prestigious, London School of Gastromancy & Ventriloquism. His PhD thesis, looks at the ancient Greek origins of 'belly speaking', from Eurykles the Athenian voice thrower through to Valentine Vox, Archie Andrews and Lord Charles and contemporary Ventriloquism in the post- Orville the Duck era.

Mr Parlanchin's ventriloquistic doctoral studies, sound fascinating, and all of his colleagues at the shop are sure his oral defence of his written thesis, will be talked about for years to come.

Plenty of fascinating books on Ventriloquism to chose from. Please contact Mr Parlanchin by telephone, telegram or new-fangled electronic mail.

Discounts available for alumni of London School of Gastromancy & Ventriloquism...

Mr Parlanchin's Book of the Month- July 2026...

This month, the inimitable Mr Parlanchin, sheds his literary spotlight on deceased American poet, writer and Gothicist, Edgar Allan Poe (1809- 1849).

Widely regarded by literary scholars, as a key figure in the emergence of Gothic fiction, the short story (handy for Mr Parlanchin, given his height!), and Science Fiction, Poe's work is still popular, widely read and his writings have been re-imagined in film, television and other forms of popular culture.

He died at the age of 40, in mysterious circumstances (more befitting of one of his macabre tales), and his last words were (apparently), 'Lord help my poor soul and have the USA qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup?"...

Mr Parlanchin, (plucked up the courage) and visited the shop's Poe Crypt (last night at midnight) , and has brushed down a few, terrifyingly, ghastly and horrific Poe books, for your perusal and enjoyment.

Please contact Mr Parlanchin by telephone, telegram or new-fangled email to arrange a viewing...if you dare!

Mr Parlanchin's Book of the Month- June 2026...

This month (June), Mr Parlanchin, recommends 'An Inquiry into the Causes of the Wealth of Nations', by deceased Scottish economist & philosopher, Adam Smith (1723- 1790). In fact, Mr Parlanchin has been chattering (non-stop) about Smith's theorem of supply & demand, and has been particularly drawn to Smith's, economic metaphor of the 'invisible hand'.

Originally published in 1776, and often abbreviated as 'The Wealth of Nations', this set is a hard to find, three volume, 7th edition from 1793. Presented in their original leather bindings, this trio of books, would grace the study of any student of political economy and theory, the intellectually curious or bibliophiles wishing to add one of the most cited books in economics, and one of the most important, to their book collections...

Mr Parlanchin's Book of the Month- May 2026...

This month, the inimitable Mr Parlanchin recommends two books, by scientist (& educator), Arabella Burton Buckley (1840- 1929): 'The Fairyland of Science (1899) & ' Life And Her Children' (1905).

Buckley, was the assistant to eminent Victorian geologist (& associate of Charles Darwin), Charles Lyell (1797- 1875), and used her position to challenge orthodox, male-centric, Darwinian evolutionary theory, and to advocate for science education for children, through imaginative storytelling and fairytales, rather than dry, scientific fact.

Buckley, was also a champion for women in science, which makes her contribution to widening access to scientific thought and education an important one, in an era when science was dominated by men.

Both books are gilt-edged, fully illustrated and stunning examples of pioneering scientific writing, which are as attractive now as when they were first published.
