Being self employed can be really tough.

Really tough to separate personal time and work time. They kind of end up blending into one.

And don’t even get me started on the guilt you feel when you take a day off (even when you have worked the last 12 in a row! 🙈 what’s that about?!?)

That’s the big question right? Why DO I need another one?

WHY am I creating more work for myself?

Well, it’s to make my farm more sustainable! Yep, I’m not just building another polytunnel for more growing space (which is a lovely bonus!)

I’M BUILDING A GIANT RAINWATER COLLECTOR!

The OG tunnel added 12k litres to our water reserves by spring this year! Which is a LOT, but on estimate from this year I think we need to clear 21k for our current infrastructure.

Before we can make our infrastructure bigger and expand our growing space we need to get the water for this part right! It’s all about the balance! Especially, when you are working in a field with no mains water to rely on.

(And let’s face it - we shouldn’t be relying on it. It’s like the Wild West out there with water companies! 🤠🌵)

So, welcome to the start of our new polytunnel aka ‘Mummy Poly’ - I think she is going to be a VERY welcome addition!

I hate w**ding. 😂

So I’ve basically designed my beds to mean I have to do as little of it as possible.

I plant slightly more densely than the recommended spacing, which means that when the plants are small, I do need to get in there and keep on top of the w**ds.

But once the plants start growing, they fill the gaps, shade the soil and make it much harder for the w**ds to get going.

So most beds will get one really good w**d while the plants are establishing, and then maybe another one if they need it.

After that, I let the plants do the work.

It also means the plants are competing for light and reaching upwards, which is great for getting nice long stems for cutting.

I’m not saying this means you’ll never see a w**d again 😂 but I’d much rather spend a couple of decent sessions w**ding than be out there every single week.

Anything that means less time w**ding and more time growing flowers is a win in my book. 🌱🌸

This is definitely one of the hardest subjects I teach to any of our beginners that set foot into the seeds to stems course on the flower farm!

Autumn sown hardy annuals can be a really tough concept to get your head around! And the BEST way to learn this one is to just have a little go!

Don’t be afraid! It really is the way you learn.

And you might even end up with early blooms too! What can be bad about that?!?!

Just kidding… it’s a bent old tent peg! Which does a smashing job of untangling and loosening roots of seedlings! 🌱

I’ve tried it every way over the years and I think I’ve finally cracked it, especially for sowing seeds at scale!

Pricking out is literally one of my dreaded jobs but I’ve learned to love it, especially when I’m not seeing half full seed trays due to poor germination! I have no time for valuable space not being utilised!!!

I know everyone has different methods and getting this one right has allowed me to make the most of my time and energy.
