Before you start planting… read this.… ➡️💍🌸

The flowers you want might not naturally be ready when you’re getting married. Plan your flowers around what will actually be in bloom.

Some plants won’t germinate. Some will get eaten by slugs. Some will flower too early. Some will just have a bad week.

Wedding flowers are not the time to rely on exact numbers.

You want varieties that give you lots of stems and keep producing.
Think cosmos, sweet peas, zinnias, scabious and ammi rather than putting all your hopes on one tricky crop.

You need somewhere to grow them, water them, support them, harvest them, condition them and store them before the big day.

Growing them is only half the job!

Because flowers don’t know you’ve got a wedding booked!

Weather, pests and timing can all throw your plans off, so always build in a little flexibility.

5 reasons why I became a flower farmer 🌸

And honestly… some of them might surprise you.

I’ve always wanted to build something that was mine, rather than work for somebody else.

Something I could grow, shape and make a living from — rather than spending my life working towards somebody else’s goals.

I’ve been self employed so long now, I think I’d be technically unemployable 😂

Not sitting behind a desk.

Not staring at a screen.

Actually being outside, getting my hands dirty and watching something I’d planted turn into something people enjoy.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

This one aged well.

Because apparently flower farming is actually irrigation, weather apps, early mornings, heavy lifting and wondering why the hell you planted 3,000 of something.

There’s something pretty special about growing a flower from a tiny seed and eventually seeing it in someone’s home, at their wedding, or being picked by a family on a Sunday afternoon.

And I think that’s probably the biggest reason of all.

I just had an idea, took a massive leap and I’ve figured the rest out along the way.

Autumn is probably my favourite time of year for making wreaths 🍂🤫

There’s something about working with all those beautiful seasonal textures — foliage, seed heads, berries, dried flowers and whatever else we can find — and turning them into something completely unique to you.

Our Autumn Wreath Workshop is a relaxed, hands-on afternoon at the farm where I’ll guide you through making your own wreath from scratch. You don’t need any previous experience, just come along, get stuck in and enjoy a few hours of being creative.

And yes, you get to take your finished wreath home with you ready to hang on your door 🍁

More heatwaves…🙄🙄🙄 So, as we continue to prioritise those flowers for our pre-booked weddings, PYO is sadly closed this week.

But, hopefully with more rain forecast next week 🙏 we will be opening on Sunday 23rd August - keep your eyes peeled for the official announcement!
(Mainly because we don’t know what is going on with this weather 🤦‍♀️)

🌹 The flower farm is getting some roses.

Not because I’ve suddenly decided I need another excuse to buy plants (although I’m sure that’s part of it 😂), but because I’ve identified a pretty obvious gap in my cutting season.

Once the ranunculus finish, there’s a period where I’m waiting for the dahlias to really get going. There are plenty of other flowers coming through during that time, but I’ve been missing a really good focal flower to give bouquets that bit of depth and structure.

So, for 2027, I’m introducing 40 roses across 8 different varieties to the farm.

I’ve chosen a mixture of colours, forms and flowering habits, with the aim of having roses that work as proper cutting flowers rather than simply looking pretty in the field.

They’ll be planted this autumn to give them time to establish, and if all goes to plan, they should be producing really well by next season.

It’s another part of my bigger plan for 2027: looking at the flower calendar as a whole, spotting where the gaps are and working out what I can grow to make the season feel more abundant and consistent.

And I’m very excited to see these making their way into my bouquets. 🌹

This summer has definitely made me think differently about how I work on the farm and what it needs going forward.

I’ve always been working on improving my soil, but when you’re farming on heavy clay, you quickly realise that building good soil takes time. It’s not something you can fix in a season.

So, as part of my plans for 2027, I’m putting a much bigger focus on soil health and building more resilience into the farm before the next dry summer arrives.

One of the things I’m introducing this autumn is cover cropping, using a combination of phacelia and tillage radish.

The tillage radish will help break through some of that heavy clay with its deep roots, while the phacelia will help with soil structure and organic matter. Both will keep living roots in the soil rather than leaving beds bare over winter.

It’s not going to transform my soil overnight, but that’s not really the point. I’m looking at the farm as a long-term project and making changes now that should hopefully make it better able to cope with the conditions we’re increasingly having to deal with.

And this is just one part of my plan for future-proofing the farm for 2027. 🌱

I’m planning for the weather we might get, rather than the weather I hope we get.
