🍂 Keep On Gardening! (Week 1) 🍂 This Week Around The Garden Centre - Just because summer's over doesn't mean the gardening stops! Keep on planting bulbs - Narcissus, Tulips and Alliums for a fantastic display next spring, and keep on planting our colourful pansies and violas for filling gaps left by summer bedding - we even have a few wallflowers still available too. Around the centre you'll spot the giant leaves of Tetrapanax 'Rex', berry-laden cotoneasters and holly standards, bright mini cyclamen, beautiful variegated Pittosporum and a lovely peach-coloured rose still putting on a show. We've also welcomed a fresh delivery of garden ornaments, including a rather majestic pair of lions 🦁, plus plenty of bird food to help look after your feathered visitors through the colder months. Always something to discover on your next visit! 🌿

🍂 A Walk Around the Garden Centre 🍂 Today's walk revealed an early autumn tapestry of colour and texture. Colourful Heucheras and mini Cyclamen brightened the beds, while a garden Dahlia stood proudly among a Euonymus mini standard and a towering Cordyline. There were golden Euphorbia 'Walberton's Little Treasure', blue-flowered hardy Plumbago, purple and variegated Ajuga, elegant Japanese Anemones and flowering Viburnum tinus. I also spotted displays of spring-flowering bulbs, full of promise for next year's colour, along with a tempting selection of gifts and garden ornaments, including a charming trio of black cats keeping watch over the display.
One autumn star was the tall Pyracantha, covered in bright red berries that bring weeks of seasonal colour and are loved by garden birds. An enthusiastic customer I met couldn't stop praising the one she bought last week! Add in flowing Carex, silver Senecio, miniature cypress and ever-popular lavender varieties 'Munstead' and 'Hidcote', and there's still plenty to enjoy around the garden centre as autumn settles in.

A Walk Around the Garden Centre - Settling into September - After yesterday’s rain, the garden centre feels fresh and calm. The H**e Donna, mini cyclamen, chrysanthemums, Abelia ‘Sherwood’, winter pansies and violas have been adding steady colour for a few days now.
The Calluna heathers are showing their late‑summer shades nicely, while the Erica heathers and wallflowers are settling in quietly, not flowering yet but coming along for winter. Border dahlias and osteospermums are still looking their best, and Gaultheria with variegated ivy make for simple, attractive pots for early autumn.

A Walk Around The Garden Centre - late August pairings - short walk because I spent all day carefully labelling the tree section - a chance display here today, shows how well chocolate cosmos pairs with the soft silver of eucalyptus. Potentilla is still bright, and the first winter‑flowering heathers are now in, giving a gentle nod towards the cooler season ahead.

A Walk Around The Garden Centre 🍏🍐🍏🍐Up the Apples and Pears! 🍏🍐🍏🍐 Cloudy skies and a welcome reprieve from the heat, today’s walk has plenty to admire - ornamental grasses swaying elegantly in the softer weather. The James Grieve apples are moving into their early picking stage - one of the earliest reliable varieties, easy to grow, suited to cooler gardens and known for producing steady crops even after unsettled spells. The pears, several varieties together, are coming along beside them. Roses are giving their late flush, the climbing foxglove is still reaching, and both tall and border dahlias are at their best. The magnificent tree fern stands among pots and ornaments, adding height and texture to the walk.
Vitex agnus‑castus is adorned with bees - a sun‑loving shrub with scented foliage and soft blue flower spikes, often chosen for its late summer colour and its ability to cope with heat and dry spells, today taking the cooler turn in its stride.

🌿 A Walk Around the Garden Centre….Or drifting off… 😴
In the outdoor beds, the lacy white blooms of the buddleja have a dreamy air, the kind of soft bloom that could brush your cheek if you nodded off in the heat. Pure white hollyhocks are a ruffly pillow to sink into. Muted coneflowers with loose petals like drooping eyelids, tiny insects napping in the prickly amber cones. Newly out for sale today, Tamarisk is pink and wispy and the leaves create a naturally chilled microclimate by collecting humidity at night and evaporating it in the day. Snoozy, soft hues are a restful remedy on this hot August afternoon.💤
