This month, we’re sharing the story behind our Golden Glo scarf, a hand-knitted piece that brings together luminous glass beads, silk, mohair, and a little craft history. Inspired by Alison Crowther-Smith’s Gathering Scarf pattern, Golden Glo has a quiet richness: almost 30 grams of topaz silver-lined size 5/0 seed beads are worked into a soft silk-and-mohair yarn, giving the finished scarf both delicacy and substance.

A long history of knitting and bead craft.

The scarf brings together two long traditions: knitting and bead craft. Since the earliest days of bead-making, materials, trade routes, and cultural influences have shaped how beads are made, exchanged, and valued. Beads are also among the earliest known forms of ornament, offering a glimpse of symbolic behaviour and social expression among human ancestors.
The oldest known example of knitting is a pair of 11th-century socks discovered in Egypt. Their fine, complex construction suggests that knitting itself had already been practised for some time.
That history matters because the Golden Glo scarf uses beads not simply as decoration, but as part of the fabric’s structure and movement. The choice of bead, then, is not only about colour; it is also about quality, shape, and how each bead sits within the textile.
