It was 960 years ago today that poor Harold got it in the eye and William the Conqueror emerged victorious at the Battle of Hastings. The presence of the extraordinary Bayeux Tapestry in London has added a bit of buzz to the anniversary this year and our wonderful new colleague, Pavla, lost no time in putting together our own topical display from the shop's large, medieval history section..
As Pavla says - whether or not you're planning a trip to London to see the tapestry, The Eagle has all things medieval covered!

Switching off the house lights for an event in the shop last night, I was struck by how beautiful some of our books looked in the soft, autumnal evening light. I tried desperately to capture it on my portable telephonic apparatus, with little success - but here it is anyway!

Update: Fantastic response to this post - thank you, everyone! So many wonderful and talented people in the area.
You should all have received an acknowledgement. The cut-off date for applications is Tuesday 1st Sept 5pm.
We will contact applicants again by the end of next week, and interviews will be held in the week beginning 14th September - the spectacular York Book Fair comes in between!

BEDFORD HISTORY DOUBLE BILL
Sunday 26th July 4pm

The Great Siege of Bedford Castle in 1224 and the Growth of Bedford Town in the Decades after the Second World War are two very different, but important and fascinating parts of the town’s history.

What unites them is that books have recently been published on each, and we are delighted to welcome their authors to the shop on Sunday 26th July at 4pm for our Bedford History Double Bill.

The event will begin with well known local author Bob Ricketts talking about the huge social changes that took place in Bedford in the decades following the Second World War, covered in his comprehensive book THE TOWN TRANSFORMED: BEDFORD 1939 – 1999 published earlier this year.

After a short interval, historian James Petre will talk about THE GREAT SIEGE OF BEDFORD CASTLE - when for eight weeks in the summer of 1224 Bedford and its castle held centre stage in the history of England. James and his publisher are launching their book, which is based on the successful conference held in 2024 at The Corn Exchange to mark the 800th anniversary of the siege.

Copies of both books will be available to purchase and both authors will be very happy to sign copies.

The bookshop will be putting on a special display of books and ephemera realted to the history of Bedford and Bedfordshire throughout the week leading up to the talks.

The event is free but places are limited so please book to reserve your place by email or by telephone or in person at the shop.

We took this little photo of some of our merry gang on February 18th - the day before I had my short notice hip replacement operation at the wonderful Bedford Hospital under consultant Sunil Santhapuri. We are so lucky to live in this town!
I'm recovering well, and hugely grateful for all the supportive messages. Hopefully I'll be back in the shop towards the end of March.
In the meantime I particularly want to thank my colleagues Liz (well, as you know, she's a bit more than a colleague!!) Holly and Jenny (pictured) as well as Cameron, James, Paul and Vania who have truly stepped up in my absence.
And to all of you, of course, who continue to support and visit the shop and buy books so we can keep the bills paid - a mighty thank you!

Well, here's a thing!
Until late yesterday, our £10 antiquarian bargain section was full - we've been topping it up all month as books have sold from it. Ditto the £20 rare book bargain section.
Then our lovely regular, *****, and I got chatting about a possible deal in the way that book lovers and book dealers do, and... well, the £20 and £10 antiquarian bargain shelves are now completely empty. 😮😮
BUT NOT FOR LONG!
My work is cut out today, finding fresh antiquarian bargains for you to peruse. 😀

It's bleak outside but what better way to spend the remaining week of January than finding and enjoying wonderful books at bargain prices?

Our legendary Bargain Book Zone always expands in January - this year it's almost out of control, with thousands of books marked at £1 or £2 in crates and on the shelves.
