Happy Bloomsday to one and all !

A celebration of the publication of Ulysses which is set in Dublin on the 16th of June 1904. The chapter structure it follows is that of the Odyssey by Homer but instead of traveling the lands of anicent Greece it follows Stephes Dedalus and most importantly Leopold Bloom as they traverse through the cracks and crevices of Dublin, getting involved in intellectual and once they drink swallows their minds unintelligible conversation. Molly Bloom, Leopolds wife, also plays an important role, as her 2 full stop 40 page stream of consciousness ramblings brings a tidy end to a chaotic beautiful novel.

Banned on its before its initial release, as its was published in installments in a US literary magazine "The Little Review," due to the nature of its content being viewed as "obscene" it finally saw publication in Paris through an independent publishing house Sylvia Beach. (Scene on the second slide)

It's a mighty novel that might take months to conquer, it will leave you rather confused and bemused but in the end you will feel as if you have experienced a work of excellence only a man like James Joyce can produce. There will never be a novel like or come close to it, therefore I cannot recommend it enough.

Keats & Chapman would like to celebrate the genius of Cormac McCarthy. The writer was best known for his work in the post-apocalyptic & western genres with novels such as The Road, No Country for Old Men and Blood Meridian. The film adaptation of No Country for Old Men dominated the 2007 Oscars and walked away with several Academy Awards including Best Picture.

McCarthys first novel β€˜The Orchard Keeper’ was published in 1965 and set the tone the writer would follow throughout his career.

Perhaps his best known work is for the novel The Road. The Road was inspired by a trip he took with his own son in 2003 and three years later it was published, and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize the following year in 2007. McCarthy began wondering how the world would look a hundred years on, and thus the story of the post-apocalyptic world seen in The Road was born.

Rest in Peace Cormac McCarthy (1933-2023)
