Woodcroft Landscapes & Nursery Woodcroft Landscapes was founded in 1999 by Stephen Magrath. In 1994 Stephen returned to Nursery work in a large cash and carry plant nursery.

Having started his career in plant propagation in Co Wicklow, he later worked in grounds maintenance at Windsor safari park and Juddmonte Farms Wargrave and associated houses in central London. Stephen has worked extensively in landscaping since the age of 16 in both commercial and amenity horticulture.

Himalayan Birch – A Tree for Every Season 🌳

The Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii) is one of Stephen's favourite trees, and it's easy to see why.

Its brilliant white bark provides striking winter interest, while the peeling bark, fresh spring growth and elegant multi-stem form make it a feature throughout the year.

They're also easy to maintain, respond well to pruning and are perfectly suited to our local climate, making them an excellent choice for gardens of all sizes.

If you're looking for a specimen tree that offers year-round interest, the Himalayan Birch is hard to beat.

Coastal Garden Planting at Whiterock Bay, Killinchy

A recently completed planting scheme for a new coastal home at Whiterock Bay, Killinchy.

Every plant has been carefully selected to suit the exposed coastal conditions, creating a landscape that will establish beautifully while complementing the clean, contemporary design of the property.

Although newly planted, this garden has been designed with the future in mind. As the plants mature, they'll soften the hard landscaping, add seasonal colour and texture, and create a garden that becomes more impressive year after year.

London Plane ‘Minaret’

This is Platanus × acerifolia ‘Minaret’, a narrow-growing London Plane and one of Stephen’s favourite trees for adding height, structure and long-term cover in a garden.

These particular trees were grown from cuttings here at the Woodcroft nursery and have developed into strong young specimens over the years.

London Planes are known for being incredibly tough, long-living trees. They have been planted throughout cities like London and Dublin for generations because they cope well with pollution, urban conditions and regular pruning.

‘Minaret’ has a more upright habit than the traditional London Plane, making it useful where you want height and screening without taking up too much width. It can also be planted through a lower hedge and managed over time to create extra privacy above eye level.

A great choice for anyone looking for a strong, architectural tree with real character.

Acer griseum – One of the Best Trees for Small Gardens

Acer griseum, commonly known as the Paperbark Maple, is one of our favourite specimen trees for smaller gardens.

What makes it special is the amount of interest it provides throughout the year. Fresh orange-tinted growth in spring, rich autumn colour, and stunning peeling cinnamon-coloured bark that looks fantastic through the winter months.

It's a tree that continues to improve with age, developing more character and becoming a real focal point within the garden.

Often described as a "must-have" tree for smaller gardens, Acer griseum is well suited to a wide range of settings and offers something to enjoy in every season.

We currently have a range of sizes available, from around £100 upwards.

Rugosa Rose 'Delahaye'

One of my favourite shrub roses, Rugosa 'Delahaye' produces masses of strongly scented double flowers in rich pink-purple shades throughout the summer.

Not only does it provide weeks of colour, it also produces attractive rose hips later in the year, adding interest well into winter.

Rugosa roses are incredibly tough, reliable plants. They are hardy, low maintenance, and generally free from many of the common problems that affect other roses, making them an excellent choice for gardens across Northern Ireland.

Best planted in a sunny position, they are ideal for adding colour, fragrance and wildlife value to borders and larger planting schemes.

Planting now underway at this new coastal garden at Ballyholme Bay, with plants supplied from the Woodcroft nursery and selected to suit the exposed seaside setting.

This new home, built by RossKyle, with garden design by Emma Rayner. Emma, along with the homeowner, engaged Woodcroft to supply and plant a carefully selected range of plants to complement the design and coastal location.

The scheme includes a mix of structural shrubs, hardy perennials and feature planting, including a large tree fern selected from the nursery to add height, texture and character.

Coastal gardens need plants that can handle wind, salt air and strong light, while still bringing colour, movement and long-term structure to the space.

New High-Spec Trailer

We've recently added a new high-spec MCN trailer to help improve efficiency when transporting trees, plants and materials to projects across Northern Ireland.

The trailer features front and rear ladder racks, a remote-control winch and a range of additional upgrades designed to make loading, unloading and transport safer and more efficient.

Investing in the right equipment allows us to handle larger trees, mature planting and landscaping materials more effectively, helping projects run smoothly from the nursery to the final planting location.
