Down Cathedral, Downpatrick - we are privileged to undertake major work to this iconic organ widely regarded as one of the finest sounding instruments in Ireland. The double fronted case in the centre of the building was installed in 1802 and the interior replaced by Telford in 1854. Harrison & Harrison rebuilt it in 1914 and 1966 adding more each time. The present work involves much needed restoration of the soundboards and actions as well as updating the console and electrics. We are also adding Great Trumpet and Harmonic Flute stops as well as Choir mutations and Pedal Contra Trombone 32ft pipes.

This was a very satisfying week transforming the sound of the Harrison & Harrison organ in St Anne's Cathedral. Working alongside Nicholson & Co. Ltd and their head voicer James Atherton we have managed to get a more blended sound of the 1907 and 1975 parts of the instrument.

Today we tuned a residence organ in North Down which we installed in 2008. Two ranks extended to 4 stops per department and built originally by S J Harris of Buckhurst Hill Essex in 1979. Simple but effective design with the possibility of adding a Bourdon 16ft in the near future.

St Peter's Cathedral Belfast - Saturday 11 October 2025 at 15.30 the Ulster Society of Organists and Choirmasters are welcoming Simon Lole who will give an organ recital on the 2005 Kenneth Jones organ. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

We have tuned it today and plenty of photos can be seen of the organ and the interior pipes. A large majority of the pipes are from the previous organ by Pels of Alkmaar 1966 and the cases are by Evans & Barr 1917 brought forward and enlarged in 2005.

Gardenmore Presbyterian Church Larne Co. Antrim - We have cleaned this 1966 Smethurst organ and added Mixture III & Flute 4ft stops. The bulk of the organ was new in 1966 but it incorporates 7 ranks of its predecessor built by Lewis in 1897 as a 12 stop organ.

The Flute 4ft is open / metal and replaces a Nazard 2-2/3ft. The Mixture III starts at 19.22.26 and incorporates the Twenty-Second 1ft pipes which it supersedes.

The Lewis stops are the 2 Swell strings, Great LOD8, Dul8, Ged8, Oct4 and Ped Bourdon.

St John's Dromara, Co. Down - this organ had one of the heaviest mechanical actions known and we have rebuilt the Swell soundboard with new longer, thinner pallets and achieved a considerably lighter touch. The organ was built by T W Magahy of Cork in 1907 and has 4 Great stops, 6 Swell stops and a pneumatic Pedal Bourdon/Bass Flute unit.

Gerry Egan 14 Oct 1939 - 14 Aug 2025

We are very saddened by the loss of our former colleague who was an organbuilder with a huge wealth of experience for an amazing 70 years. Gerry worked in 20 countries and we think 13 US states. He grew up in Chorley Lancashire and started his apprenticeship in 1955 with Rushworth & Dreaper in Liverpool. In London he worked with Gray & Davidson, Hill Norman & Beard, J W Walker and N P Mander. At 21 he was foreman for Walker's rebuild of Holywood Parish Church. He returned to Northern Ireland in 1978 and almost single handed did the site work for the Ulster Hall and St George's Belfast. Staying on he worked for Wells Kennedy in Lisburn 1979-1981 and then again 1997-2013. In 1992 he rebuilt the Telford organ in the Falkland Islands on his own followed by Birmingham Cathedral for Nicholsons in 1993. He was involved in the Royal Albert Hall for Manders in 2002/3 and regularly did the USA tunings for Walkers. He joined Pipe Organ Preservation Co. in 2013 for 5 years beginning with the new organ for St Patrick's Lisburn. Afterwards Gerry settled doing subcontracting work for various firms notably Cavan Cathedral for O'Donovan Organs. Late in life he became very involved with the Ulster Gliding Centre and the Royal British Legion. Gerry's attitude to organs was outstanding - he wasn't daunted by any task and he came up with many solutions from his vast experience. He leaves behind a son and daughter and several grandchildren.
