Since its’ establishment in 1954 Frearsons has been one of Belper’s keystone businesses. For over 70 years, in one form or another it has faithfully served the people of the town and its surrounds, be that as stationers, toy store or jeweller. For the last 19 of those years, since taking on the responsibility of such a respected local name it has been the privilege of our family to steward the store through what have been some of the hardest retail conditions ever recorded, the 2008 financial crash, the decade of austerity that followed, the COVID-19 pandemic, we have faced all of these hardships and still remained committed to providing quality service to our community. In order to continue to safeguard the legacy of Frearsons and in order to continue to adapt to the ever bleaker conditions of high street trading, we will be making the difficult decision to close our bricks and mortar premises on Bridge Street at the end of August. We know this will likely come as a shock and it is not a direction that even five years ago we would ever have imagined taking but in the face of rising running costs and lower footfall in the town we must do what we believe gives us the best chance of survival going forward. This is absolutely not the end for Frearsons, we will continue to operate online, offering not only the same quality products you know us for but a renewed focus on our handmade and bespoke jewellery, the true passion of our in-house jeweller. We will also continue to offer the same expert jewellery repair service as always as well as our scrap metal and second hand purchases. This will be a big change for us and again, we want to reiterate that this isn’t a decision that we have made easily or lightly but out of necessity and to ensure our survival into the future.
More than anything else we hope you will continue to lend us your support in the coming months as we look to find our feet on our new path forward and we would like to thank all of you for making our (almost) twenty years in Belper truly unforgettable.
