Douglas is the author of the 2023 short novel, With or Without Angels, described as 'A work of seriousness, empathy and beauty' by Stuart Kelly of The Scotsman. The evening will include a reading of With or Without Angels and a talk on art, angels, love and Alan Smith's 'New World'.

About Douglas:
Born in Edinburgh, Douglas spent most of his working life as an English and guidance teacher. Now retired, Douglas resides in the Scottish Borders. His writing has been published in various publications including Northwords Now, New Writing Scotland, Aesthetica and The Irish Literary Review. His short stories have won competitions including Fish and The Neil Gunn Prize. He has published two novels — The Chess Piece Magician and Mrs Winchester’s Gun Club.

With or Without Angels:
An ageing artist, faced with his own mortality, embarks on one final artwork. As he battles to complete the project, working with an enigmatic young photographer, he finds his past and present blurring. Through the act of creation and the memories it excavates, the artist comes to a realisation about what matters most, and what he will leave behind when he is gone.
This hybrid and innovative short novel responds through fiction to The New World, the final artwork by the late artist Alan Smith – which is in turn a response to an eighteenth-century fresco, Giandomenico Tiepolo’s Il Mondo Nuovo. With sparkling, dreamlike prose, Bruton weaves a story around these artworks, arriving at both a profound exploration of the creative process and a timeless love story told in a new way.

Body Talk – The Vulnerable Issue

The Body Talk zine issue 2 explores 'Vulnerability' in relation to our mental health and body image. Through art, photography, comics, poems, and unfiltered stories, the zine explores the spectrum of relationships we have with vulnerability and our perception of it. It talks about insecurities, racism, substance abuse, love, loss, relationships, and isolation, and in doing so, redefines vulnerability and exhibits the strength that comes from embracing it.

Digger by Oscar Chik




Oscar Chik’s photobook “Digger” is an inside report from the world of gold-digger and sugar daddies.
Chik, after having been approached time and again by wealthy older men on Grindr (the gay dating app), decided to fraternize with the men who propositioned him. The book documents – in text – moments from Chik’s conversations with the men leading up to their hook-up, photographs from his dates, detail shots of restaurants, hotels and private homes, as well as some of the pictures Chik was sent on Grindr.

“It all started when, in 2013, I decided to work on a documentary project. I was looking at my interests then realized that old wealthy men would always approach me, flirtatiously. So, I decided to document it. […] I was always joking about wanting to have a sugar daddy but it’s not really my thing as you must use your body to make money, and this is one of the reasons why most guys are ashamed of it. I would never do it… Although if the guy has a private jet, I would never be ashamed of dating him.”

Hotshoe 208 - Martin Parr

Martin Parr, one of the most important figures in British photography, is well known for documenting the English social classes. A prominent member of Magnum Photos since 1994, he changed how we see British society and documentary photography with his use of colour rather than black-and-white.

With the help of the Martin Parr Foundation, we've put together a collection of portfolios from his vast body of work, as well as an extended interview by Aaron Schuman, personal essays from his contemporaries including Alec Soth, Anna Fox, and Trent Parke, and a new story by Adam Ganz in response to Parr's Autoportraits in Crude Metaphors.
